Hey, I'm looking for a good all purpose survival knife, can only spend 130.00 though, so that leaves out the Beck WSK......Shucks....any help?

All purpose to me means you can carry it most anywhere and it doesn't look like it belongs in a Rambo movie. How about the Ritter Survival Knife. It's really just a limited edition Benchmade Griptilian 552. S30V and a nice blade shape.

I think you would be better getting a blade more like Ontario Rat-7 designed by Jeff Randall. They have one coming out in D2 soon if you don't care for the phosphate 1095.It comes with a quality SPEC-OPS Sheath. Can't beat that for the money. They can be found way below the 130.00 you quote.I don't have much faith in over the top designs like the Spectre Pig.To be honest,it reminds me of the old Rambo crap knives you could find in the back of the mags in the 80's.ABS plastic handles, hmmm,a quality handle material for sure :barf:

They have a good review of the TimberPig in Tactical Knives magazine. The abs handles are to keep the cost down. It's full tang, anyway so handle material shouldn't be that big of a deal on the performance of the knife. To each his own, though:) .

Another option would be to get a Swamp Rat. Can't beat that warranty:cool: . Check out the concrete block chop:eek: . http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217950

So far I've used a CS SRK, BK-7 and a RAT 7 for a bush-survival blade and my current favourite is the RAT. More versatile, easier to choke up on, adequate chopper and nice ergonomics.

It's a cliche I know, but the best survival blade is the one that you have on you at the time. I like survival training that teaches how to use small blades as well as large. For me, the most likely survival scenario is a light plane or chopper ditching over water or going down in remote desert. In this situation I am most likely to only have a folder and/or multitool on me. My ideal combo for this scenario would me spyderco military and any multitool (prefer LM Supertool or VIC Swisstool)

I'd go for the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp...

Customer service is awesome...Eric's always there to answer your questions...
Warranty is superb...you can't get a warranty any better than the Swamp Rat Warranty....

I don't really have the Camp Tramp but i do have the Battle Rat and the Howling Rat...the Camp Tramp is slightly shorter than the Battle Rat and would be great as an all round survival knife...

It's easy to sharpen (easier than my Fallkniven S1)...and the Respirine C handle is nice on the hands...absorbs quite a lot of shock...

I don't think you can get a better knife for that amount of money...

I'm not sure about this but i have never heard a complaint about the Camp Tramp....

edited to add: the 'pig' looks like it has a way too pointy point! It looks very breakable...plus it's ugly and doesn't look like it can chop that well...so in a survival situation...no good...
just my opinion....heheheh

For a care-free, real hard-use knife I would suggest the good old USMC Ka-Bar. I've had some reservations about the leather handle but man, wait till u've spent enough time with it... the leather handle actually became the part that I like about the knife most now. :) Really like this knife. Oh and get the full-size (7 inches blade)one, of course.

If you go for one of the Beckers, check this out -- http://www.woodsdrummer.com/sass.html

Ming is right, though, that you should always have a tough multipurpose tool with you even if you're not planning on a survival situation. These big knives are hunting, backpacking, and combat zone tools, but daily life counts, too :)

My thought for a survival knife was to put my 24 year old SAK Champion (not the SwissChamp) along with a Leatherman, a Randall #14, a 2-D Mag-lite, a Surefire 6P, two FRS radios and a Colt 1991A1 w/ spare mags in a small Eagle cordura bag along with a whole bunch of other equipment. I can grab that bag on my way out the door as easily as a huge knife and the cordura bag can carry a lot more stuff.

Were I to do this differently (and I may) I'd get a Camelback HAWG and use that as my survival kit. A big knife, a small knife, an SAK, a Leatherman and lots of other survival situation stuff (med, space blanket, heavy garbage bag et al) along with 100oz of good water. All this in a format that is easy to transport.

I like Ras's idea of the "variety" pack...one SAK, one large and one medium size knife. and maybe a saw...$130 can go a long way!

My all purpose survival knife is a SAK Soldier and a USMC Kabar!

I'm looking for same kind of a knife and I have heard a lot of good things about falkniven A1. I haven't yet bought it for myself because of the money but I will buy it someday. It might be a good knife for you.

here is the manufactures page: www.fallkniven.com/a1f1/a1_en.html
