Best angle to sharpen O-1?

Hi,

I use a Sharpmaker and have the option of 30 or 40 degrees inclusive. Which would be the best angle for an O-1 blade 3/16" thick, by 1 3/8" wide, by 4.5" long? It's fully flat ground with a very thin edge (by R. Laconico). It will be used as a do it all hiking and camp knife.

Thanks,
Jason

How do you use your knife? Are you going to be rough with it? If so choose the steeper angle. I'd choose the lesser angle, personally.

I don't plan on using it too rough. Maybe some light chopping at the most. So, you think O-1 can handle 30 degrees alright?

Thanks again,
Jason

01 is a great, forgiving steel that was designed for edge holding. I grind them thin with a zero convex edge quite often. I wouldn't think a 4.5" blade is going to do much chopping. But if you plan to baton it, put a 40degree angle on it. If that impedes cutting performance, move down to 30.

Learn to convex, and get rid of that lanski dealio.

I agree with Fiddleback (good to see you here bro - it seems like it has been a while). I learned to convex very quickly and it was not hard. Watch the videos on Knivesshipfree.com. They are EXCELLENT!
