Want to re-profile a Spyderco Endura with FFG in ZDP 189.

Any thoughts on best all around angle for "189"?

Choices are keeping it beveled using an Edge Pro Apex or convex it, freehand, on the Kalamazoo.

What say you?

I sharpen my Dragonfly freehand with something around 15 or 17 degrees per side and it gets pretty sharp. I've heard that ZDP-189 performs well with really acute angles, but I haven't tried it yet, myself.

I have my ZDP endura at 22 degrees inclusive with a really tiny 30 degree microbevel(3 passes per side, alternating). The grit I finish the microbevel at is with the 400 grit moldmaster SiC stones. Then I just strop a bit(maybe 3 passes per side) to take care of the last vestiges of the burr. It's freaky the way it cuts. I don't use it for heavy cutting though.

i'd go with a V edge.

the exact angle depend on what you use it for, not what other do.

if you have an edge pro the best approach imo would be to check for factory angle, use it, lower the angle a bit, use it, lower etc ... until you find the spot where it won't hold to you daiy EDC task, then either microbevel or stay at a more obtuse angle.

that's the beauty of the edge pro. you can't do that freehand, at least not that easily and consistently.

In my experience, and the manner in which I use my knives, ZDP performs best at 12.5 degrees per side. There are those who advocate a 10 degree per side back bevel with a 15 degree microbevel. This should also work out quite well if you are a proponent of microbevels.
