Best antivirus for my new laptop?

Ok, so the trial version of Norton is expiring soon on my new HP laptop. Not sure if I want to stay with Norton, so I'm fishing for suggestions from the experts. I have the free version of AVG on my home computer and I like it. AVG is looking good for the laptop too. Is there a big advantage to paying for the full version of AVG? I don't mind paying, if it's worth it. Thanks in advance, folks.

I got rid of Norton (firewall and antivirus) about 4 months ago and am very glad I did. It let quite a bit of malware and spyware in, and was a memory hog. On the recommendation of a computer specialist here, I purchased Kaspersky and am very happy I did: it's non -intrusive, fast, and seems to be very robust. Do a search for "Kaspersky" in "Gadgets & Gear" and you will uncover some useful threads, and debates about the pros and cons of several different packages.

I had Norton for years and paid for the annual updates. Then someone here pointed me to AVG Free and I have it on every desktop and every laptop. I "update" manually several times each day and have been VERY satisfied with the performance.

The best anti virus is the one that you will quite religiously keep updated and current in both definitions and applications.

I've used Norton, never had any problem, but don't let that get in the way of a good 'ole fashioned Norton bash which is sure to come. ;)

I've been using Norton for 4 years and have never had a problem with it. People are as fanatical about their choice of AV software as they are about their knives!

AVG works very well, never got a virus in the many years I used it. It's easy on system resources as well, which is nice. I have also used Avast, which is also nice but has modules that can do a little more, They are, instant messaging protection, network shield and web shield, This "little more" does use some system resources, but you can disable them too. Though it's a little more clunky to use, it's not as intuitive, documentation could be better, but once you figure it out it works fine. Well, at least for me it did ..... like always YMMV.

Avast information.

Anyway, if the AVG free version is working for you, no need to change it's a good one.

The only real thing I don't like about Norton is that it's pretty intensive on system resources.

Yeah, but if you have a filthy fast computer that's being wasted on just word processing and Internet surfing you don't really notice it. (Yes, I'm talking about myself. ;) )

And, if you have 1GB+ of RAM, Norton shouldn't really affect you much at all. I agree though, if you have 512k or less, Norton might slow you down a bit.

Well, my laptop does have a gig of RAM, but all that's being used for porn processing, thank you. :p :D

Use Norton if you want half your hardware clogged up with it all the time.
Otherwise, I can recommend Bitdefender. For spyware and the like, I use Ad-aware and Spybot. Good combination, I don't have any problems.
Using your brains still is THE best anti-virus there is in the entire world. You can easily avoid 99% of the garbage out there.

I have a new intallation of Norton Internet Security 2006 on this computer which is only a P111, 850 and it runs fine. I have Norton IS 2005 on my laptop, and Antivir on my P4, 3.02 as Norton expired and I wanted to reformat. I like all three, but overall, I like Norton IS and have had no troubles. Agreed scans take a while. I tried NOD 32 and read it is a challenge to get all the options sorted, but yes it was fast. I uninstalled and went back to Antivir.

I have a little file here that keeps Live update going until 2042 if you want a little more time to decide?

Dan, I find it hard to believe that 1 GB is enough... :jerkit: :D :jerkit:
