I am looking for a flashlight for my dad for Christmas that he can use in the garage, I am looking for one that has great area light and not so much out the front beam. It can use either AAA, AA, or CR123 but I am looking for it to be under 50$ unless it uses AAA, or AA than it can go up to 60$ Thanks a lot!

For what exact purpose?

Shooting up the ceiling for a 'general area light' ? I would think a lamp would work better than a portable flashlight
If you use Nimh batteries such as Enegizer Green or Eneloops, it will be a lot cheaper to run with a longer runtime

Well it is more for looking inside engines and other little things the light sucks balls in the garage and he needs a flashlight.

I think the OP is looking for a flood light as opposed to a light that is designed for "throw." Flood beams are better as close in work lights and would be good for working in a garage. With this in mind, I'd look at Zebralight.

I'm betting you can get better pricing if you look around, but the Zebralight site will give you an idea of their offerings. http://www.zebralight.com/

Meh not really looking for a headlamp (EVEN THOUGH IT CAN BE DETACHED) just looking for a simple click light with good power, durability, LED, AAA AA or CR123 battery, relatively small, with good area light and not so much out the front beam for throw. Anything like that?

i have this exact light but an older version led so it isnt as bright. it is powered by two aa batteries and has a fantastic warrenty. ten years.

also if you get the cone attachment it will act like a lantern. it will fit even though it is made for another company, but it may be a little tight.

this will all come to less than $60 and if you use the promo code: cpf8 you get 8% off of your total order

I am a big fan of Fenix lights personally. You can buy a diffuser cone or flip up cap for most models that will light the whole area. I like that option because the AA models can fit in your pocket for daily carry but when you need to light a room or work area you just pop the cone on.

Are you looking for something he can work with or.... are you looking for something he can look into tight spots and hard to see areas with.

If it is the latter
.... get him a Mini Mag Light / 2 AA LED Model and call it a day.

They are on sale at Lowes through tomorrow for $10.97 [less than half price] and it will do just fine. When doing mechanic work, I have one at hand at all times.

No use spending a ton of money on some ""super light"" that will have no advantage over the Mini Mag. :)

If your Dad is a mechanic and needs a flashlight for general use and to do inspection with... get the above.

IF however, he needs a light so he can see to work..... get him a super duper drop light like 'springnr' suggested.
