Best around the house Infi?

The knife I always keep available and use constantly from opening packages to light chopping/prying into some wood outside is a Swamp Rat Howling Rat Little Mischief (w/micarta). While I have several Busse's, most of them are in the larger catagory. I do have a Game Warden, but find it's to small for my hands on doing most household/minor outside chores.
I was looking for some opinions on the best "house" Busse that'd be around the same size of the Howling Rat. An AD seems a bit lean for what I use the knife for, especially the BAD. A SAR5 or SS? Does the shape of an SS make them difficult to use for standard tasks?
Thanks much.

Dave

SS all the way. I have a BAD, a .22 gw with convexed edge, and a SS (that I straightened and convexed). I use the SS the most. Very handy. Even before I straightened the edge and then convexed it, I used it the most. They are real cheap right now on the exchange.

BATAC baby. It's the best modem killer around.

When I think of house infi it is either some nicks for around the kitchen or a BARF in case someone tries to break in my house... .

My wife and kids have been using the Skinny Ash ALOT around the house since I've been gone. They pass on the MS even for the little jobs.

Easily the much altered Muddy Warden gets to be the 'go to' blade when cuttin', slicin', pokin' or scrapin' needs to be done. I sanded the handle just to where there is no texture but it is still full size. I originally thought it would get slippery when wet but actually it gets 'tacky' and has a better grip that when dry.
Put it in the BCS Armoralleather sheath and it rides in my pocket all around the house and yard.

Only the BAD's at .125 are thin. The original, and HARD to find AD was .150.

All since have been .195 saber and .170 flat ground. If you want small and tough a .195 can be had for a great price.

To me it sounds like you may need one of the newer .195 saber Meaners, they are also easy to find at a great price.

ASH all the way, Skinny may be more practical but I've never held one except for the LE. I had a BATAC and didn't care for it.

Second the BATAC. Or a straightened SS. I still use a GW or AD for most small chores, altho with the Furry Murray, I'm using that as well. All 3 COULD be used to split wood, but I have better tools for that.

If you MUST have one, BATAC.

I don't think you'll find anything tougher then a .195 AD or Meaner for their size and as Ken44 mentioned they can be found at reasonable prices now.

I have both and the AD has been a great edc blade for me, tough as they come for the size and of course holds a great edge.

I like the Meaner a lot but the sheath hasn't come yet so it hasn't had any use.

If I could go around town with a Batac I think it would be the ticket but I can't so the AD has been the chosen one for now, your area may differ and this would be a great option.

Good luck in the search.

I use my game warden when preparing steak and chicken for the grill and I just used my sjtac to slice and dice a pineapple. Both cut better than my crappy kitchen knives.

What, no Satin Jack? :D

Nope ... Both my SJLE s are designated camp / hiking blades.

I am constantly changing things up so nothing is set in stone. I have used one of my SJLEs for cutting my steak and even thought its .25" thick, it slices almost like a cultelli :)

I have an ASH LE and a BATAC LE, but am aiming for something smaller. I'll have to look at the Meaners and SAR5s I think. I think a SJ would be best, but after the AK my budget is lacking. :) Thanks for the replys.

Agreed. Meaners and ADs are my favorites. At first I didn't like the handle design but found that they were made really well for maintaining a light grip and yet allowing a lot of control and cutting power.

If you are worried about the BAD being too thin for some things, but an AD being too thick for other things, get one of each. It's easy to do and not too expensive, and you can carry them both together without needing a bulky carry system.

I have used my AD and Meaner Street around the house and in the kitchen. They cut really well for my needs.

Heck, if I had an AK, you better believe it would be used around the house. Cheese slicing, BLT's anyone?, stuff would just be getting sliced all over the place.
