Hello there, just looking for some feedback from those of you that go to your Beckers when you're whipping up something to eat.

A BK7 was my EDC knife for close to a year, now I EDC a BK9. Still has the truck bed liner on it, although the 7's is heavily worn. I batoned my firewood for this last winter with it.

I'm a new homeowner, haven't really put the money into my kitchenware yet. The BK9 is likely three times the cost of my entire kitchen's cutlery combined, and it works at least nine times as well. Particularly its great with watermelon, slicing up chicken, mincing veggies. I have big hands and it does a great job.

Still, I think there's gotta be a good go-to all-arounder for the kitchen in the Becker lineup that is a little more wieldly than the 9- what are your recommendations?

What should I replace the flimsy chinaware with in my kitchen? Your thoughts welcome.

If you want the best single Becker in the food prep arena - BK5, BK5, and did I mention BK5?

Yep. BK5 & BK15. BK15 gets the most use (out of my Beckers) in the kitchen by far. Though I do use the BK5 for some larger stuff.

Just try the bk5 on a watermelon... I don't think I've ever enjoyed cutting up fruit so much lmao

A stripped BK5 is my kitchen knife. Loved it so much that I thought the BK15 would be a nice smaller companion knife. But I never could warm up to the handles on the 15.

No Becker manufactured by Ka-Bar is designed for kitchen use although BK-5 could do decent job. If you can get Beckers by Esee, get them, otherwise just use the 9 you already have. For the money of single BK-5, you get the set of 5 Old Hickory kitchen knives and still have some $$ left for extra 10" OH butcher and a beer or two.

I've gotta say that the 15 that sits in our kitchen gets more use than any other knife and that is by all three of us, my wife, my 10 yr old son and myself. I just got a 5 and am excited to put it through its paces.

I used my BK9 in the kitchen once (had recently moved, but had gone camping during the travel period, so I knew where the BK9 was but not the kitchen knives).

While it was sharp, it was really quite horrendous as a dedicated food prep knife. It was wedging apart the onions, cracking carrots in half, etc. The geometry is all wrong for food prep work (which is fine, its not designed for that).

So, I'll go on the record for saying that "none" of the Kabar made Beckers are what I'd choose for when I'm around the house cooking up something to eat. The ESEE/Becker collab kitchen knives are great though (got my parents a set), as is the Joy of Cooking (does that count as a "Becker"?).

I frankly don't understand it when people say they're using a 5/15 as a "dedicated" kitchen knife. Trying it out a few times to see how it works, or using them while out in the woods, sure, no problem I get that desire. But for dedicated use, its much better to use a real kitchen knife IMO.

I'm really liking my Tojiro DP Gyuto (10in), and have enjoyed a few Victorinox kitchen knives as well. Also, Opinel makes some great kitchen knives. All of these are cheaper than any full size Becker (I guess with the discounts on the 4/5 its getting close, but my 10in Tojiro was ~$63, and its the most expensive out of those I've mentioned), and really are quite nice to use.

Anyway, I'm not saying anything bad about Beckers, just saying they're really not designed for kitchen use. However, if you feel the need to use "kitchen use" to justify another Becker... then more power to you :).

The 5 and the 15.

These two knives actually reside in the kitchen instead of with the rest of my kit. They are not "dedicated" kitchen knives but I seem to use them in the kitchen more than anyplace else on a regular basis.

The 15 is (mine is stripped) is just so darned handy that not using it in the kitchen almost doesn't make sense. The 5 is great for larger stuff, from bigger onions on up. It is, as already suggested, nothing short of a joy with watermelons!

I like using the 5 and 15 in the kitchen because the cheap set of kitchen knifes we have are not all that great to work with. Plus it gives me more hands on time with them. Are they designed for that? No, they are meant for much more. But I can't be out in the woods as much as I like so I bring part of that experience into the house. Plus the 15 is the best steak knife you can have. Now I've got a hankering for watermelon. 😀

All Beckers work well in the kitchen (excluding 2,3,4 maybe 17,;) ) cause they are thin behind the edge all the way up to spine. There are fixed blades out there that are best used as bludgeoning tool than being actually used to CUT/SLICE things they are so thick behind the edge and upwards. Thats one thing that eally draws me to them is their slicablity( making up new words I tink 😉

Anyways use my 15 and 9 most in the kitchen.

when it comes to food, whether at home or at camp, I use the 15 religiously. Wife wanted to make smoothies last night, and I smiled just because I got to cut stuff up with the 15. Her response was why not just cut the bananas with a butter knife :(

Ham, turkey, larger cuts: BK5
Everything else larger than an apple: BK15
Smaller than an apple: BK14/24

Lots of 5&15 votes. I agree. The 15 for everyday kitchen & the 5 for bigger jobs. Get em now before these discontinued models are gone for good.

the best beckers in the kitchen are probably ethan and his clan

but if you can't get them to come over and cook

you probably want his knives :D

I've never had the pleasure of having Ethan or his family over. So I've substituted them for JOY. The upside is that in this form he's available to me pretty much any time. The downside, is that he's not near as engaging or conversational this way:/.
