Hey, Kiddies,

I'm looking to invest in a metal-cutting bandsaw after Yule, and I was wondering on people's opinions on what gave the best bang for the buck, under $500?

I've looked through the Grizzly and Enco catalogues, and seen those offerings, but I really can't tell much difference. I realize that I'm going to wind up going with a vertical/horizontal unit, most likely in the low-hp range, for this money--but it's all I'll have to work with. Still, I want to get the most I can out of it, so what are your thoughts on brands, features to look for, and other possible sources?

Thanks a mill, folks!

I used/use a horz/vert.,for wood&metal for years,b4 buying a woodcutting bandsaw,now i use it on metal only.I would get one fron Harbor Freight as they w/pay shipping on purchases over 50.00.Get horz/vert w/3/4-1 hp motor 641/2"blade.From a bandsaw blade supplier,get 14tooth bi-metal blades for steel.You can get wood cutting blades also.If i remember,price is around 175-199.Good luck

I must agree with MJH, I have a Dayton vert/horiz. 64 1/2 blade also and it works fine for me. I am not it a production mode so it may take a little longer to cut a piece, but for the money I think it is great. Be sure to use the bi-metal blades. Good luck with your search.

I just ordered the one from Harbor Freight a couple of days ago, and am waiting for it to be delivered. Total cost was under $220, shipped, with an extra bi-metal blade. Pretty sure it is a 1 hp motor. Anyway, its gotta be better than my cheapo Black & Decker and a LOT better than using a hacksaw!

I agree with these guys.I have the Harbor Freight saw and have used it for almost 12 years. Its far from the best, but unless your making knives for a living,it should be fine.I also agree that you need bi-metal blades, standard blades seem to last about half a knife. One thing though, the upper guide rollers do not lower enough,so unless you can add to the arm or make a new one,it is not the straightest cutting saw around.Good luck, Dave

The harbor freight 1 hp hor/vert. model is good. I had one, but broke it really really bad (my ugly temper reared its head, and there was a 20lb. sledge hammer near).

Any how, its a good machine for the money. I wanted something a little better, just bought a Wilton with a few extra features, 93" blade etc...
