I use a 3m Trizact belt for raising a burr to sharpen blades? What do you use? Use a belt that is better than a Trizact? Thanks!

I sharpen using plain old Hermes AO belts. A half worn 120 grit followed by a half worn 320 grit. I then make a couple of passes across a felt wheel, loaded with green compound, to knock the burr off.

I use either a 120 or 180 grit ceramic or AO belt. Usually ceramic cause I keep the dull ones around. Norton stuff.

It really depends on a couple of things: how thick your edge is when you begin the process, and how fine and edge you want at the end. That said, I may use any combination of belts to put a on a "test edge." But in the end I hand finish with stones and papers to as close to a cutting edge as I can get, then I take it to a bench stone. This is the only way I consistently get the exact edge geometry I want. The belt theory also applies to stones--how fine you want your final edge will determine what stone(s) you use.

it dones depend on the knife, but most of the time its a worn norton 120 ceramic followed by a norzac x100. then i take the burr off on a fine white ceramic rod, that way the very tip of the edge is high polish then it has teeth! works great for food inperticular

I start with a 240 grit A/O belt, then move right to a 15 micron belt, then use a leather belt with green chrome oxide. I raise a burr with the first two belts and strop with the leather belt. The final edge is polished and razor sharp. This method is rather fast and produces a fine cutting edge that seems to last for quite some time before a major resharpening is needed.

Thanks for the reply's guys! Just wondering if your felt wheels are medium or hard? Again, thanks!
