Hey I'm new to knife making and I was wondering what the best grinder for under 150$ would be. I've been looking at the grizzly h6070 but I was wondering if it was strong enough, it's a 1/3 horse motor and gets 3450 rpm. Any suggestions will help. Thanks!

I've been using a craftsman 4x36 for years, you just have to glue a tile to the platen to raise the belt up a bit.

For that budget check out the Craftsman 2x42. It's way too fast and underpowered, but belts are widely available and it can be modified pretty easily. I made my first 85-90 on one--more than enough to fund a better grinder later.

Look around for an older Sears ( or similar) 4X36" belt sander. You want one with a separate motor and a "V" belt. These are dirt cheap, but were built like tanks. They usually sell for less than $50 in great condition. Change the pulleys so the thing runs at half the original speed.....or even better, put on a three step pulley and make the fastest speed half the original. Trust me, slower will be much better.

You can change out the motor for a larger one if needed. Many of these had pretty small 1/3HPmotors. 3/4HP is good for a unit like this. 1/2HP is better than the original 1/3HP.
Down the road, you can swap out the motor for a 1/2 or 3/4HP 3Ph motor and VFD for another $100-150.
