I am trying to make a tough decision here and am still pretty new to the
knife world after a long break from knives.

Trying to get a good idea of excellent choices for defense and fighting. I am looking for something which will take a good edge, LOOK decent and serious,
yet trying to stay in the modest price range of about $100.00. I have found there have been a lot of changes since I have been knife shopping (about 12 years).

All advice is appreciated.

To stay at or below $100.00, I would consider the following:

1. Ka-Bar D2 Extreme- $99.99 and just under eight inches
2. Becker Knives- great value and several options under $100.00
3. Ontario Knives- I bought the Marine Raider for under $60.00

Good luck, Michael

Cold Steel Recon Tanto 2nd (blemished) is $50, a Trailmaster Is $105 but that's probably too big. If you like double-edged, their Peacekeeprs are under $100. The ODA, OSS and UWK models don't have great steel but you don't need great steel foir a dedicated fighting knife since you won't be cutting much with it (hopefully). I don't think Cold Steel knives are all that great, however many of their designs are definitely oriented towards fighting rather than utility. http://www.coldsteel.com/fixed-blades.html

If you really want to be budget-conscious you could look at their plastic knives, http://www.coldsteel.com/nise.html , that Tai-Pan model would certainly scare the crap out of someone, and be lightweight to boot!

Maybe a flat ground Ranger Knives RD7. It has a 7.5” blade, is well balanced, and the handle provides a very secure grip. You could always get Justin to grind you one a bit thinner to make it lighter and faster in hand.

Kind of new, myself, but here are some within the 8" to 10" that you specified:

Cold Steel 8.25" OSS (double edged):

Ranger 9.5" blade:

Becker 9" combat bowie:

10" Becker Brute:

10" Rtak (check forums for edge problems?):

but why stop there?:

There are quite a few really nice knives around 7", maybe you should think about it. 7" doesn't seem like very much until you're holding it, then it's quite impressive. Just ask my girlfriend. Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Then again, maybe you should just listen to Jeff. He's got 3,600 posts.

I know it's not the advice you wanted, but you might want to really assess your reasons for getting a 10 inch knife for self-defense. It's always good to evaluate your motives and logic behind something like that before you actually buy it/consider using it. See if there's another solution to your problems than nearly a foot of sharp steel  ;)

Sorry for ruining the party. :o
