Best Big Folder - SMF or Skirmish?

Dear Forum-ites,
I am looking for a big strong folder, solidly made, easy to clean and maintain, for fairly heavy use, but one that can be carried in a pocket without needing braces to keep my trousers up.
I have narrowed down my search to a Strider SMF or a benchmade 630 skirmish. Both have the blade size and strong build I am looking for, both use a good steel and both are not too bulky for pocket size (and no I don't want a fixed blade).
I have not and never will handle either unless I purchase them, as I live in South Africa, so am dependent on gleaning what info I can.
I am well aware that the SMF markets at double the price of the Benchmade. I own a couple of Benchmades (710 in M2 and 705 in ATS34) and like them both very much. Quality is good but not near a Sebbie. It seems though you get good bang for bucks. I would happily go for the more expensive Strider if I could be convinced its build quality was much better - but several posts on different forums suggest that while robust it lacks somewhat in QC that a price tag of over $400 would seem to require, with no such aspersions on the QC of the 630. Unfortunately the special ops aura around the SMF doesn't do it for me - I need harder facts to persuade me to part with the extra bucks. Can you convince me the SMF really is the better tougher knife, built to a higher quality and standard than the benchmade, and perhaps are there other alternatives I should consider within my suggested parameters.

While I have been known to cap a little on Striders F/F, especially compared to CRK, I must say they are great knives, and I currently own 5 including the SMF. Looking to buy my 6th.
My SMF required a little bit of pivot tightening when I got it in order to give a totally solid side to side lock up. I was being anal but hey, it's how I wanted it, solid. Also, the Strider will hold it's value in the long run for future sales or trades. They also stand by their prodcts 110%. Buying Striders is more of an asset reallocation than a purchase. At least that's how I feel. If ya got the doe, it would be an easy decision for me.

the 630 is a production knife. And currently unavailable due to supply problems on BM's part. the SMF is available but costs close to $300 more. Is it $300 better? No, I don't think so - but it also has the Strider-following backing it, which means that you'll be able to get a good price for it should you need to resell.

My observation is that Striders hold their value much better than other semi-custom, including Sebenzas.

I would just stick to the 630 (if you can find one, that is) and save the $300 for something else. However, if I had $500 lying around, then I'd go for the SMF, if only to see if you share the same sentiments about Striders with the other Striderfans.

One thing tho', Striders come with a no-questions asked warranty.

iht, welcome to Bladeforums!

On our Knife Reviews & Testing forum, we have a current Skirmish passaround review (pics) which may help you decide.

I've handled the Skirmish and a few Striders, although not the SMF itself. If it's ultimate durability you need, the SMF might be the better of the two. But the Skirmish is a really big, tough knife itself, and I don't think you would be disappointed.

Depending on how you get one, I would suggest asking the dealer to check it carefully, since it would be harder for you to return it if there were a problem. (I've got a few Benchmades, and I've never seen a quality control problem myself.)

The BM 630 is truely an amazing knife and I can't imagine many folks seeking a large knife being disappointed!!
