What do YOU as a knife buyer feel is the best blade finish for a using knife.

Please explain?
For a collector of coarse the hand rubbed satin wins in my opinion.

BUT what about the knives you use?
What holds up and look great after really beating the h_ll out of the blade?

I can't say what I prefer but can say what I have now learned to hate. I don't like sand or beadblasted blades. Here the air is not wery humid and sea is practically sweet water(less than 0,3% salt) so there isn't any salt in air to excite rusting. My carbonsteel puukkos do not corrode but this month TWO of my beadblasted folders have got (minor) rust spots. One was of ats-34 and one of cpm440v.

Hi Darrel,
I like the stonewashed finish, too, but I have a question about it: What must the current finish be on the blade before going through the stonewash process?

Stonewashed, hands down. Nothing up your sleeve is there Darrel?

Maybe this counts, maybe it doesn't: but regardless of finish I've always been atracted to black coated knives. And why not! Aside from looking cool, they can reduce corrosion on blades and, depending on the coating type, prevent some of the smaller scratches. Gotta go black.

I like some bead blast finishes, like the ceramic blast looks nice. Satin finish is always a plus, even on a user. Only ting I cant stand is black finishes/coatings...yuk.

For a user there is none better that stonewashed. Beadblasting does nothing bust promote blade rust.

Now I must go with SATIN finish. It looks great and does not rust as easily. I really dont like the look of stonewash. The lines aren't as crisp. SATIN all the way.

I guess it depends on the type of steel and what I'm going to be using the knife for, if it's a hunting knife I prefer a mirror finish, particularly if it's a steel prone to rusting/spotting, for light use folders etc, satin is my personal favorite.

I prefer a stonewashed (tumbled) finish on working knives. It wears very well, resists oxidation and is generally worry free. I love the look of a satin finish, but one scratch in the wrong direction and the effect is ruined. A blasted finish can resist rust if done properly (evenly pinging and compressing the surface as opposed to digging little pits), but is also susceptible to marring and scratching.

Darrel,
90% of the knives that leave my shop are hand rubbed, 400 or higher. I offer other finishes but hand rubbed is the most popular even at greater cost. I also find that the hand rubbed finishes hold up best with Kydex sheaths.
I like to see combinations used like mirror polished hollow grinds with bead blasted or hand rubbed flats etc.

I like a nice satin finish, but the ceramic bead blast that Kit uses it awefully durable and stands up to lots of abuse. The CBB give a slightly shiny patina - hard to describe, and pics of it aren't always that good. The CBB is smooth not course/rough like std bead blast. I know the ceramic beads are expensive, but in the long run they cost you less since they will last much longer. Too bad more folks don't use CBB.

I've banged my CBB folders a lot and they still look great.

CBB is good stuff!
