I am looking to get a few books and or videos that will help me get into knife making. I seee in the back of Blade Magazine they advertise a few books. The $50 knife shop, one refered to as "the bible of knife making". Anyone know of the best one or two for the bare beginner? I need to start from the beginning. I sure I can just start hacking with a grinder but when it comes to heat treating, I do not have the slightest clue what to do. Any help would be great. Thanks.....

Until I got Ed Fowler's "Bearing-to-Blade" video I didnt have a clue what I was doing.

Ed shows you how to make a blade, going from the start to the finish and the many steps along the way.
Now he uses 52100 and sheep horn, but most all of what he is doing you can use for a common steel like 5160 and many other handle materials.

A book for me was of very limited help.
I had already lots of knife making books, but they just dont give you the true idea of the way you should move when working on a blade...
Watching someone in a video is 2nd only to being there watching the guy in person.

The other thing you can do to really learn alot about knifemaking is to ask lots of questions on the forum.

Gil Hibben has a very good video on basic freehand hollow grinding on his web site. It is titled "The Rough Grind" and it takes you through the beginning steps of grinding from cutting the blank to profiling blade and hollow grinding. It goes through everything up to the point where the blade would be ready for heat treating.
