looking for a 8"-9" Bowie style $100 camping knife give or take a few dollars.

I'm looking for the best quality steel I can get on my budget and I need a serrated edge. I plan on using this hard, so leather handles are out. (capable of being used as a field hammer etc.)

Anybody out there have anything in mind?

knives iv'e been looking at
SOG Tigershark (SOG-S5)

I keep seeing AUS-8 is this a good blade steel for this type of knife?

I'd consider a Becker BK-9 for that price range. AUS-8 is good stuff, and often under rated in my opinion, but....I'd still rather have a good carbon steel for a chopper.

Other Bowie type options would be Ka-Bar and Ontario knives.

Go for the TigerShark or the SOG Tech Bowie is also very nice blade. Here is a picture for comparison. I purchased my Tiger for $89.00 on Ebay but its a big knife. The Tech Bowie is on the bottom

Heres another vote for the bk9. Great knife and handles abuse well.

Or if you need the serrations the becker tac tool:thumbup:

To be guaranteed of good quality, I would say your choices are limited to the Becker BK9 and the Kabar Bowie. Ontarios have inconsistent quality control.

Are you totally set on the bowie/serrations thing. I think you can get an RD7 from Ranger Knives for about $100 dollars and I love mine. The sheath is great, the pocket is just large enough to hold a swedish firesteel, plus a swiss army knife or small leatherman to handle finer cutting tasks.

Check out this link. It's where I got mine. If you order the second one from the top, with the black blade instead of satin it comes out to just under $100 with shipping. However, I also have a BK 9 and it's a great knife as well. A whole lotta value for dollar there. Also, the handle scales are hollow and can be filled with small survival items.

Sorry, I missed that you wanted a serrated blade. I'm not sure if you can get a Swamp Rat with a serrated blade.

there are no serration options for swamp rats.

I fail to see how a bowie knife benefits from serrations, but I am not a fan of them.

I don't think the beckers have serrations.

If you need them, SOG might be the best bet.
