OK....picking up where my question about space blankets left off. What's people opinions on the best brand or source for mess kits. Military surplus? I'm talking about the old school pan/plate combo (unless someone knows of another good compact design)....

I am using a Canadian Forces mess kit right now. what were you planning to use?

I carry a USGI canteen, cover and canteen cup. They have a burner/stand that also nestles in the canteen cover with the canteen and cup. For a stove, I carry a German issue Esbit stove. Small, compact and works well with Esbit fuel.

Another I'd recommend is the Swedish army trangia. You'll get a stainless pot with lid, trangia alcohol stove, fuel bottle and other gear I think. They are pretty cheap and do a great job.

Other trangia sets are a bit more money, but pan, pot, stand, stove, etc., comes with the set. I like the trangia. Good kit.

right now I'm leaning towards snowpeak ti stuff- a little pricy- but nice...not looking for a stove (if I was I would be seriously considering the jetboil system...)

I agree with the last post. I have a snowpeak titanium cookset that I use. very strong and light, more so than the military cookset you are talking about (I own one of those too). Snowpeak has the best prices on Ti cookware anyplace. Look at their website www.snowpeak.com and look at backcountry.com for lower prices, they give you free shipping on anything over 50 dollars.
