Hello there- I'm a ship model maker in my spare time who makes about 2 to 3 models a year. I typically spend about 100 to 300 hours on each model and I'd really like to find a knife that can serve as an all purpose helper. I need to shape many parts that are basswood strips or birchwood dowels. Also need to pry open various paint and stain bottles and cans. Exacto's have their place but it is way past time to get a good knife. Suggestions please!

Thank you

If it was me, and I needed a good carving/whittling knife, I would use a 303 or 703.
3 blades with different shapes
They would be small enough to handle detail work, but not too big, which could get tiring on the hand.
If you need bigger, then the 301 or 701.

Prying open lids.... I would keep a small screwdriver around for that.
The trade off is good whittling blades vs tools....

small pocket knives aren't pry tools, use a 303 for your work and a screwdriver for prying.

Thank you ! I am going to order a 303. I do use drivers for prying - just thought that a carving knife might come with a pry blade. Thank you for the 303 idea, I'm sure I'll use it for many more models (I've got 26 requests in the Q !)

Ok everyone do not attack me, please. Well, Uncle if I was over in the traditional forum you would hear me say look at TL-29 on the bay or a Swiss Army Knife. BUT, here in Buckland the guys are speaking good words. HOWEVER, as a specialized model maker.......you could watch the bay for a 303 or a 701 with a secondary blade that is already broken by some other low character knife user and then grind that blade into a pry blade for small items. You get a Buck knife that's damaged and likely a good buy, you customize it just for your use and your repurpose of a damaged knife save's it's soul and makes your Buck brothers happy. The bad side to this is that often the main clip is the one broken. If the knife god's are with you, you might find one with a broken spey blade and things would really be going your way...........
