I've been EDCing a Swamp Warden and I love it. It does everything a knife like this should.

That said I feel like buying something a little bigger and with scales, to carry when I want something beefier than the Warden. Not completely sure on specs but here's some things I'd like, and wouldn't like. I can compromise though. Open to any of the Busse brands. Going to be saving up for some time so I'll have a chance to browse photos of all the suggested models.

 SR101 or INFI blade steel, fairly thin blade, micarta or G10 scales, full flat grind, fairly pointy tip, robust enough to handle reasonable prying and small enough to comfortable carry around on a pretty regular basis.

:thumbdn: Mudder grips (Love them for a woods knife but for EDC my shirt sticks to them), 154CM steel (Had trouble getting it as sharp as I like on my Scrapyards), large sharpening choils that can't be used to grip the knife, knives with the cutting edge really far from the main grip (Think Howling Rat), recurves, and would prefer non-coated but I can always strip it myself..

Some knives I've been looking at are the Game Warden, Boss Street, Vex, Meaner Street and Active Duty.

What's different between the AD and MS? Was the MS ever made with a flat grind?
Those that own the Vex, would you be comfortable doing some light prying with it?

Just for reference, some I've tried and didn't warm up to...Culti (Ergos off for me), Mud Puppy (Didn't like the choil and had trouble getting the 154CM very sharp), Howling Rat (Cutting edge too far from main using grip, don't like using choils in knives this small). Also had a Hairy Carry I got rid of...like the overall design but it's 154CM.

well, the BOSS Street is a hard one to beat given that it's basically what you're describing and is offered direct from Busse now - so it's the best value if it works, and will be the least expensive to try (for the most part).

it's really hard, IMO, to suggest otherwise - since you can always go and get something different if the Street isn't what you want, but the opportunity to buy one before the secondary market inflation does it's thing is closing as every day goes by.

I have a BOSS Street on order, to pair with my BWM. and I'm going to give it a real try, for a smaller bush/outdoors knife. I EDC folders, so none of the Busse blades work for me in that regard - but I know several around here do EDC some INFI, GW's especially.

my two cents.

best of luck.

Of those you listed, every single one except the vex has an over-sized sharpening choil.

The difference between the AD and MS is both the blade shape (MS is more aggressive looking and has more of a clip point shape while the AD has a more classic drop point for this size of knife. The butts are slightly different but it doesn't make much difference in typical grips.

As far as prying, I wouldn't be a fan of doing so with the Vex. D2 isn't the toughest stuff in the world. I am actually hoping for a 154CM version, as the Bussekin 154CM is very tough and takes a mean edge if you work at it long enough. An INFI vex would be awesome too.

I know you said you don't like using choils on a knife this size, but you might want to give the High Street a look - it's a slim handle (same as the MS), but a smaller talon hole and guard, which both makes it more comfortable in choked up position, and also wastes a little bit less blade edge. Since it's got a slimmer handle than the HR, it might be a bit less bulky for EDC, and it's very comfortable in both the regular and choked up grips.

here are two you asked about (AD and meaner), and the High Street:

And while I'm at it, some more comparisons...

BOSS, Meaner, and AD:

Spine Shot: My meaner and AD are both "tweener" thickness - .180. The BOSS Street is .208.

yeah yeah, hence "basically", besides it's all relative in Busse-land. ;)

nice photos, btw.

did you end up selling that Street?

I sold both the meaner and BOSS streets - only ones out of there that I still have left are the AD, HS, and Vex. And I'm deciding whether to mod the AD to do something about the useless elf choil.

The Vex has been my EDC since I got it, even though I've bought many other knives in a similar size in that time. I don't use it for prying, but it's an awesome EDC blade for cutting tasks.

mustardman, thanks for those photos, that will help a lot. The High Street looks really nice, I'd seen it before but didn't know it's name.

Actually, technically I don't have the High Street - it's my fiance's knife. I tried to steal it away from her but she wasn't having it.

I agree with mustard man that it depends on what you consider too-large for a choil.

the family freindly-ish knives that I know of that fit your criteria (wich is pretty close to mine as well) that come immediately to mind:

-swamp rat rat tail
-busse killer bee (NOT thin at all, more like (barely) sharpened prybar)
-busse boney active duty
-busse basic 3 or 5
-busse skeleton key

for the more standard (and exotic) fair:
-active duty
-leaner meaner street
-boss street (not thin)
-sh mean streets
-police/combat recruit
-assault shaker

-(if your willing to accept the 154cm) swamp rat harry carry

the ones in green are the ones I personally would go for.
