I have seen many threads here about the best knives under a certain amount of money,,say $30 or what have you..most of these knives of course are made in Taiwan and China.. I would like to know the best knives for the money that are American made.:)

Well, not all Spyderco folders are made in Golden, CO, but you can assured that the Spyderco models that come from Taichung, Taiwan and Seki City, Japan are known to be of the highest quality...in the eyes of Spyderco users and fans...(of which I am one.)

I'm not so sure a Spyderco can be had for $30.00, unless you go for the Byrd line, which are made in China, or go for a teeny weeny Lady Bug; that said, since we've started looking outside the US, then a Victorinox SAK would be my choice at your price point.

Just my 2 cents

Kershaw Needs Work-This knife is not pretty to look at but it really is well made, feels good in the hand and can really take a beating
Becker D' Eskabar-Great collaboration between ESEE and Becker. All the good from both companies and a great price.
Any ESEE knife- They are not the cheapest knives but definitely the best warranty in the business is worth the extra money.
ZT 0350- The 0350 in my opinion is the hardest use knife, and toughest knife you can get for the money.
ZT 0801-Titanium Frame Lock, Elmax Steel, KVT, and the ZT warranty for all under $200. When these first came out I was wondering what the catch was.
White River Knife Knucklehead-A great skeletonized stainless steel knife made of S30V and priced competitively!

I will add later as I think of others!

The Buck 830 Marksman, Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight in S110V, and H&K 14715 all get you a heck of a lot of knife for the money, but they're all well over $30. Don't get me wrong, there a some very solid, inexpensive knives made in The States, but generally speaking higher wages mean higher prices and so you need to look a little higher end to get the really spectacular values.

Are you trying to ensure quality, or are you trying to buy American?

Many of the name brand companies sell knives from a variety of countries, but still have quality products. For instance Spyderco knives made in China are still good quailty and worth the price.

If you want American made, Spyderco and Benchmade have American made products as I'm sure some other companies have, I'm just not familiar with all companies.

Im going to toss in my usual Buck Vantage. I think I paid $25 for my small select from a large outdoor sporting shop.

I want to buy American...I think its important..important to me anyway. I realize its difficult to get an inexpensive knife that is made here..but I just wanted to know if there are any American knives that are reasonably priced. I am pretty new to knives..I am not even sure why I want more of them lol..but I guess I have been bitten by the bug. I own a Benchmade Leopard Cub which I got over ten years ago..but never bought another knife until recently. I have a 152 Old Timer Schrade, and a Mora, and a Kershaw Chive,,which has unfortunately disappeared. I guess the disappearance of this knife has gotten me interested in a replacement..which is why I asked the question.

Original Old Timer knives by Schrade. The company went bankrupt in 2004, but you can still get many models for a reasonable price at auction, even NIB. Generally they are made with 1095 steel, very durable Delrin handles, and have a consistently good build quality. Look for "USA" on the tang stamp to ensure you're getting the real thing.

Vintage Camillus, Schrade, Ulster, etc from now defunct companies and closed plants. Easily found for less than $30. More often for less than $20. These knives have great steel properly heat treated and often much life left in them, and the variety of available patterns is incredible. As Bob W. alluded to, you'll have to like delrin though.
