best cheap slip

I am looking for opinions on the best cheap slip overall. Let's narrow it down and say stockman for 20 bucks. It leaves the camillus yello-jacket, I think the moore maker "working knives", and maybe some other manufacturer? Looking forward to your plastic handled answers.

I suggest a three step program:

Step 1: Drive to a local Walmart (preferably one that's out of the way)

Step 2: Proceed to the Gun/Knife counter and ask about their remaining stock of Schrade stockman knives.

Step 3: Buy all of them that you can find.

That's what I'd do. I got the last from my Walmart and wouldn't dream of parting with my user and backup. I just don't think you can beat them- of course I got them for $10 each.

Sincerely,
Anthony

Yeah, I love my ot, and part of my post was a comparable price/quality question, as they are gone, gone. Some company has to be the "new" schrade, and I was looking for feedback; I was trying to avoid "hey, buy a $50 knife" responses, which all lead to "Sebenza" responses. I have no experience with camillus slips, nor with the moore maker working line (which may actually be camillus) ot the new gran'pa line from...I can't remember who makes them.

Dijos,
You danced all around the Gran'pa series, as they are made by Camillus... :D
They are 1095 and they are real close to dead-ringers of the Old Timers.
I have a few Camillus slipjoints, and they are a good working knife in general, IMO. There is still a Yello-Jaket 2-blade Congress on sale for $15.99 in their Closeout Store. Just as infomation.

Good hunting.

The gran'pa series seems to be the best bang for the buck since Schrade. There are a couple other pseudo-Schrades such as Rigid and the new Taylor stuff but they use stainless and are imported.
I believe the Non-Walmart Bucks are still made in the US but I think they are 420.

Well, no schrade, I'd go with Camillus. cheap and simple. By the by Mooremaker's regular stuff is made by Queen, and the working series by Camillus. Hope you find yer knife, and let us know what you get!

Sincerely,
Anthony

I say spend a few more bucks and go for Case's CV series in the working yellow or for a few dollars more the amber bone.....much better than most Camillus's I have owned althought their carbon series and new Gran'Pa series are interesting.

I say go to the nearest antique store with a good stock of older carbon steel slipjoints and find yourself the niced, most unused $20 stockman in there. Shrade and Camillus are both good and some others can be found cheaply also that are possibly equal or better. As far as new ones go, who knows. Maybe a yellow Case or Moore Maker or a cheaper Queen.

This may be a bit over your'budget', but you may want to check out Buck's 300 series. They can still be had at most online places like Smokey Mtn Knife Works. Walmart has replaced Schrade with CHina made Buck 300's. If that floats your boat, they are cheap in cost. The quality is ok, but check one before you buy it. I bought one for evaluation and its now in the closet.

Bowzer made a great suggestion, but look on ebay. The possibilities are endless, the choices fabulous. Put a 30 to 80 year old classic in your pocket. Imperial (solid handles), Schrade Cut and Schrade Walden, even nice old products by Colonial. I saw a beautiful New York Hammer go for under $25 and so what if the spey blade was half boken. You probably never have to castrate a calf.

I have a yello-jacket canoe from camillus that I recently purchased, and since I got it, I've carried it. It is a nice little user knife, and I love yellow delrin as a handle material. The blade came with a half-assed edge, but it was 20 bucks, and ten seconds on the white sharpmaker rods got it wicked sharp. It's just the right size, and a canoe in your pocket is barely noticeable.

Cheers
Pete
