First of all I am computer illiterate. :o We have a desk top and 2 iPod touch (kids) in the house. I wanted to get an inexpensive tablet for my wife for Christmas. She's always playing on the kids iPod touch, but hates the small screen. I don't need a super powerful machine......just a few apps and some Words with Friends type stuff.

Can you offer any advice or point me in the right direction??

I ended up buying the Nextbook 8" Tablet 16GB Windows 8.1 Bonus 16GB Micro SD Card. It was under $100....cheap enough.

Define cheap.

Aah yes, the latest and greatest in cyber-security. :)

With a clear budget I could have given some concrete suggestions. There are a lot of good tablets out there to fit any price class. Oh well, congrats on the new tablet Monofletch. I hope it works for you.

The Samsung Pro 8.4" at $200 was cheap IMHO. It is much better than my not so smart "smartphone". And the resolution on that screen is awesome. It is also a good trade off between a smaller tablet that is hard to read with small fonts and the larger tablets that are too big for most things but, occasionally nice to have even though they are a pain to lug around.

It doesn't get much cheaper than the Verizon which cost "zero" or rather the $35 connect fee and a monthly ~$20/month as part of a two year contract. I mostly use it for maps and emails. But could be used for other stuff, I just haven't figured out what for yet. :D

I would have recommended a Nexus 7. Since the new Nexus 9 has just come out, the 7 is being discontinued and you'll be seeing them go on clearance very soon. It's not a "cheap" (quality not price) tablet either. It's one of the best on the market IMO.

I like the Samsung Galaxy Tablets for their mix of price, features, and quality. Bought my wife one.

Hope you're happy with the Nextbook; I don't know much about those.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with the 7" screen and I love it. Everything I need for the right price. Plus, it has a micro SC slot for expandable memory.

I just bought a Asus Memo pad 7 from a big blue box store for sub 100. It has proved sofar to be useable and though it takes a half second here or there it opens and runs apps rather fluidly. My only two gripes are that it only has 1 gig of ram, and 5gb of useable storage. I ordered a 64 gb mirco sd card for it and that should give me more than enough room for movies and music. The battery life looks really good with normal use and the reviews I have seen of it concur of about 8 to 9 hours real life use.

I just replaced my aging iPad (2) with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. About half the price of the bigger iPad. 300 bucks at Amazon. Add a 64 mg SD card and you have more capacity than the iPad.
So far, it's an excellent tablet. Does everything I was doing with the iPad.... Using it to post this.

Most of the reviews of the really cheap items are iffy.....Support may be a problem.
