Hi folks,

Sorry for all the posts but I'm (as always) trying to get set up in my little knife-making shop and have another question regarding acetylene/propane torch units (as well as for use in my gas forge).

I want to (if possible) buy a acetylene torch kit that I can use with propane/oxy. I was told this was possible. I want to use this setup so I can operate the torch (soldering guards and differential heat treat on small blades) and use the propane for the forge.

Does anyone have any preferrences when it comes to brands?

Appreciate everyone's advice.

I just bought one of these smith torchs. I saw one demo-ed and Liked what I saw. It's a well made torch the dealer claimed better'n victor. I've run Victors all my life and I like this torch.

You can find the sets on ebay, too

If you don't mind me asking; what did you have to give for this unit, and can you order directly from this site?

Many thanks,
Dana

Well I will put it this way there are a lot of torches and then there are Victors. There is a Victor clone that is part to part interchangeable with Victor. The thing about a Victor is that you can find parts for them and depending on where you live that can be a big factor. I had a Purox set which is a good well known brand and could not get parts for it. I got my torch set from Harbor Freight and added the extra tips from MSC.

the victor clones aren't all that great. I wore one out in about 8 yrs.

The Smith comes with a lifetime send it in warranty. The torch head has orings and a "hand tight" connection.

I Bought my torch kit off ebay for about $200. I bought it from one of those online weld ditibuters. I would have bought it from mu local weld supply store but they don't carry smith here.

Smith makes the famous Smith "little torch" used by many jewelers and crafts people.

I've always been a victor fan until I handled this torch. :)

Thanks Gib and Sweaney for the tips. I'm bidding on a used Smith setup (have to buy the extra tips as this one only has a couple). If this doesn't work for me I'll look for another set through one of the dsitributors on ebay.

Kind regards,
Dana

I bought a small kit with th esmall tanks at a yardsale :D
The small tanks didnt last long enough to even bother with. I had to get a larger set of tanks..... but now I am all set up ;)

Dont waste money on the small tanks if you plan on using it much. Just my .02 cents....
