I'm just an uncoated kind of guy I guess. :)

Looking to strip the coating off a RC4 I have. Something available at local hardware/home depot/wal mart would be great.

Who makes one that works?

Thanks.

I've seen people with good results from this stripper from home depot. Something similar should do it fine. Lay the knife on plastic wrap or a plastic bag. Soak it with stripper, wrap it in the plastic so it doesn't evaporate. Voila, stripped finish.

Most strippers, or at least what I used. Eat through plastic. Use aluminum foil.

I bought something similar from the auto parts store tonight. Report on its effectiveness tomorrow.

Yeah you could scrape until your hands bleed, or just spray something on it and go back to RAT forum and let it do the work itself!

It actually didn't take much work to scrape off the coating. Once you get the blade under it you can peel it all back in one piece. But yes, if you have a chemical stripper then it's a bit less work. Only took me five minutes though--I didn't want to wait overnight! :D

As an example of how cleanly it peels off:

I loves me some strippers!...in a can? what will they think of next?!

somebody please post a pic of a " stripped " RAT ??? i'm a little confused why somebody would buy a coated only to strip it .

Because I didn't get the knife for the coating.I got it for its materials, craftsmanship, design, and warranty. The one I have is well used with some small spots of coating coming off as it is.

And I like my stuff to be a bit different than others.

Project is complete. I use Marhydes "Tal-Strip" and it worked great. Two applications of about 10 minutes each, scrape the paint away with some steel wool, and a nice bare blade presented itself.

I hit the blade with some coarse, medium, and fine abrasive pads to create a nice satin gray color.

Reprofiled the edge a bit and used a bit of vinager to protect the blade with a patina. I'm very happy with it.

No counting the sharpening, about a 45 minute project.

the iarcraft grade paint stripper you buy at autozone is perfect. paint it on, hang the knife, let it bubble ooze and drip right off. Take a piece of paper towel and whipe it dry. done in 5 minutes.
