I want to attach a dedicated striker to my new ESEE fire kit.
Which would be the better choice?

I use the back of my Griptillian to strike the ESEE fire steel. I always have it with me and it works great.

I should add, that I don't like a striker attached to the steel... it's too hard to use.

But that's personal preference, of course.

Even with a decently long piece of paracord? I figure if I space them out enough it would be ok....

I'm only speaking from experience. Even with a long enough cord you'll have a long piece of cord to mess with.

I've used a Strkieforce for a long time and like that it has a built-in striker and can store tinder, but I haven't touched it since I started using the ESEE and the back of my EDC.

Works best for me.

I don't carry a fire steel everywhere I go, just when I go to the woods. But the folder is always in my pocket, so I never have to worry about needing a striker. Like I said, I've tried other things, this is what works best... so far.

I use a hacksaw blade. I sharpened one end and wrapped the other end in duct tape. There's even a lanyard hole. You've probably got a few bent or dull blades on the bottom of you tool box, no need to buy anything:thumbup:

I use the going gear on a long bit of cord. don't overthink this.

He's right. Try out different things and see what you like. Honestly, half the fun of a hobby like this is taking the time to develop your own system.

Who cares if you have to try 50 things before you find something that fits you best? :)

I recently got s shipment of those black ones in the first pic...they work as well as anything I have ever used. Impersonally use the back of my knife.

a thick piece of broken glass from the bottom of a bottle works amazingly well, but it's kinda hard to pack and take with you.

the Philips screwdriver on most Leatherman tools also works well.

sharpen the side of a P31 or P51 can opener and you've got a multi function tool.

as mentioned, a hacksaw blade can work well if you square up the back, and with a MFS, the teeth of the blade can be used for making magnesium dust and spare your blade. a short sawzall blade works without having to modify the hacksaw blade.

even if you like to use the back of whatever knife, i like having a dedicated striker, because it's all to common to find that what you need to use part of a kit is lost or missing.

Another good striker is to get an old file, clamp it in the vise and get a big hammer and break off about a 3" chunk. Grind the ends smooth ( they will be sharp) Makes a wicked firesteel striker and can be used with flint or chert also.

I like this idea. I put my firesteel and a chunk of hacksaw blade on one of the aircraft cable keyrings to keep them together. It's easy to seperate the two when you need them.

I use a rock the most, but after that the striker from Goinggear is a great tool for it.

I tried making strikers out of an old hacksaw blade, but it turned out to be a fair bit of work, those hacksaw blades are tough! Had to hold the blade with vise-grips while trying to grind it, and it was hard to get the shape I wanted. When I was all done it still didn't work as well as the $1.50 GoingGear striker! I didn't get a sharp enough edge or something. So I wound up buying a dozen of the GoingGear strikers, to have in different kits etc. I have one tied to my ESEE firekit with a piece of thin elastic thread, gives me enough length to strike with, but stays always with the rod so I don't lose it.
