Best chopper?

Walking Man's post got me wondering, so I thought I'd ask a slightly broader question to get some opinions on the BBC (Best Busse Chopper). My two questions are...

  1. What's the best chopper in the Busse line-up (past or present), period?
  2. When you factor in the size of the blade, which Busse (past or present) gives you the best chopping performance to size ratio?
In that second question, I'm wondering if there are shorter blades that provide as good or better chopping performance than larger ones. I realize too that performance is contingent upon the task (ie. for something like clearing brush, you'd surely want a longer blade.). So let's set the task at something like shelter building and/or firewood collection.

My suspicion is that folks will answer (1) BM and (2) SH. But I'm wondering if there are some surprises in the Busse line-up.

The best Chopper in my experience is the SHBM, however, I have not compared it to the HOFSH. The SHBM feels better to me and more confortable than the E-series for chopping. The E-series feels better in the NO and BA knives. But in the larger knives, the wider blade pf the SHBM is better, IMO

i would say chucks machete would probably be the best chopper i've seen thus far :D

the axes looked pretty nice too....

as far as whats available right now, i'd say larger moab takes the cake, but it is a custom order production blade.

in the normal line up, the hogfbm will probably whomp anything thats come out thus far

i've always been partial to the basic 9 crinkle coat edition.... thought its a smaller blade profile, the lighter handle puts it up there with the bme for actual chopping power for me

man.... i want the fbm to come out....

knowing its up next is actually worse then not knowing when it will come out, cause now there is a (kinda mostly) time line for its arrival...

I can tell you the axe with the mirror polished edge (non-hooked model) chops like crazy! :D My SHBM does a great job too, as does my SH-E and HOGFSH. Now do I have a stroke for stroke comparison of their performance say chopping through 2X4s? No. Just my personal opinion. I am sure there could be some imperical data collected if given the time, but that is Cliff's thing. :D

The Tutles at OCC build some awesome choppers. Big Motors, Nice wide rear tires, plenty of billit parts. They even have there own TV show:p :D

I've seen the show, and I really like their choppers. But I did ask about Best Busse Chopper--not best OC Chopper. Still, could you talk about the OC Choppers with respect to shelter construction and firewood collection?

OK, I think I'm getting it. SHBM= Straight handled battle mistress, right?

Good, you have graduated to Advaned Piglet Status now.

Heh heh. For a few seconds I thought it was steel heart battle mistress and wondered what kind of Norse god would be able to wield something like that. I'll shut up now.

LOL,

So when people say that no one uses the SHBM's because they are too valuable, tell'em how wrong they. Not only do we use'em, but we throw'em.

I use this one to chop all my firewood:

Actually the MOAB might just be the best chopper of all, but I don't know that anyone has used one. Cliff wanted one, not sure if he ever got one.

What about the Bolo?

The Aftershock Bolo?? Man, that is one beautiful blade! One day, I tell ya, one day...

I think Walking Man just traded one off that was exercised so he might know. WM?

rasberry on the bolo for chopping prowess. its a modification of the bme - so its actually lighter at the blade. were you to cut the bme handles down to something like on say, the blue grass bowie, then it would probably over take the normal bme in chopping ability. while i have never actually used the aftershock bolo, so i cant say if the slight recurve aids in anything any, i can say that having used a mofo - if you put a lighter blade on the same handle without severely modifiy the blade (like making it into a khukuri), it wont have as much chopping power as the larger heavier blade.

i found that the basic 9, even though it was lighter and smaller then the bme was a better chopper because of the forward balance cuased by the non exposed tang and lighter handle material.

even though i like the e handles i have found when you are doing heavy chopping your pinky finger really takes a beating. i would really like to see the mofo/mojo brought back with a bigger blade and the sf handle. have yet to try the fusion handle for comparison but the sf doesn't have the pinky hooks which i prefer on a big blade.
