Tis the season. What's your best knife (knives) for field dressing Odocoileus virginianus?

How about this: mini AFCK or mini Axis for cutting around the bowel (I like a small spear point for this), Tim Wenger Spydie for the rest.

Maybe I'm a dinosaur, but I'll pick a Buck 110 or Vanguard.

I've thought of going up to a Fallkniven F1 (clearly a better knife) but then I remember where and how I hunt, and I quickly return to the idea that the 'best' for me may be a decent, inexpensive 'beater.'

Absolutely no knife has performed better for me than my Dozier Yukon Pro Skinner! It handled all of the deer in camp last year without needing to be resharpened (I was running a field test). It really outperforms any other knife I have ever used for that purpose.

Perhaps the Talonite Cetan I have on order from Rob Simonich will do even better. If so, it will be one awesome knife! In the meantime, Bob Dozeir's knives are at the top of my list. Well made, awesome sheaths, incredibly sharp, rugged, usable tools.

most recently I've been using a factory second CS Master Hunter.......cheap, sharp, decent blade shape.

Maybe I'm also a bit old fashioned but I see a folding knife and an animal as conflicting.
It's too messy and a folder is a pain in the butt to clean. I've never used anything other than a fixed blade. They come in every size and shape a person would ever want.

Uncle bill,
I hate to say this, but I can't stand a Buck 110 for field dressing or anything that ivolves blood and a knife!!! It is very handle heavy, has no guard and no grip!! I realy don't like any folder for Deer Prep.
I make Fixed blade hunters in two sizes. They have evolved over the years into what I have been told many times, is the perfect deer knife!!! Both sizes are available in a skinning shape blade also. The ones on my website are fancier that what I make for most hunters. I usually use textured or bead blasted Micarta or a good rough piece of stag! If anyone is interested in seeing the small hunters, I have a pic with several of them. Please Email me for it,
NEIL

Dr. Lathe, Please let us know what characteristics you think make your designs outstanding, and post a picture illustrating those characteristics. Thanks.

I field dressed a deer with a SAK tinker on one occasion. A friend shot an elk a couple of years ago, then found he had no knife with him. He gutted his kill with a folding saw, then returned the next morning to skin and quarter it with more conventional tools.

For a true fixed blade field dressing tool, the OEC Whitetail Skinner is tough to beat. For a complete set, the Kodi-Pak and our new Griz-Pak offer two practical knife-saw combo sets.

I can't imagine hunting anything without a good fixed blade knife on the belt. Forgetting a knife and going into the field can cost a person his life. When I was a kid I was hunting grouse alone and took a tumble down a steep rocky hill and got pretty banged up. Best thing that ever happened to me since it taught me that even on a typical afternoon bird hunt like that accidents can and do happen. 35 years since that day and I've never fished or hunted without a good knife with me.

This year will be the virgin run of the Dozier Straight Hunter. The shape is perfect, and construction of course is top notch. Next year I'm looking forward to using the Lynn Griffith Tactical (Large) Hunter, which I'm fully expecting will become my Number One hunter. I'd be interested to hear a review of the Spydie Wegner by someone who has actually dressed out a whitetail with one. Good Hunting to All!
