Best criteria for a big fighter?

I'm interested in a big fighter. What do you folks think of my criteria?

HANDLE
I'd like the handle to index my hand as well as my Kasper FF, and be of a material that tends not to slip (I really prefer exotic materials but I don't know what would work as well as, say, a textured G-10 or Micarta). From what I can tell from the picture Darrel Ralph just posted in the Custom section on BladeForums, the handle looks really good. Maybe I'd want a bit more of a finger grove (like my Kasper FF).

STEEL
I need suggestions here. What steel (or combination of steels) at what total thickness?

I love forged steels and the idea of differential tempers. The primary purpose of the knife is to carry concealed, probably behind my back, and draw with the flair and hopefully the results of Mr. Dundee. So, I've been thinking that a super shinny blade would be best for putting a scare into a bad guy. Do you agree?

On the other hand, might a really cool Damascus pattern be just as stunning?

Also, with a cool toy like this, I would want to whack at stuff when I'm in the woods.

BLADE SHAPE
I like a bit of a recurve--as it seems to make a snap cut really effective. (Again, Darrel's knife on BladeForums seems great). As for grinds, I really have no idea what is best.

BALANCE POINT
I'd like the knife to balance out well, but frankly I haven't yet decided what is the best balance point for a large fighter.

My Boker A/F is slightly handle heavy, but I understand other knives are slightly blade heavy, and others still, balance on the forefinger. What's best??

I hear that some people look for comfortable triggers on big fighters

. Sorry, had to do it... I'm a lover, not a fighter...

Good luck in your quest.

I've always been partial to at least a 6 or 8 foot blade on my fighters. Why get to close when you don't have to. As a matter of fact why fight with a knife at all.

Oh, that's a relevant, helpful, and courteous post.

Cameron,

With the exception of the recurved edge, you have just described to a T, a Mad Dog Panther. 10" carbon steel blade of Starrett O1, differential temper, Indestructable composite handle with dep finger groove, Dundee Sheath.

I personally have a Cougar which is a custom 8" version. The 8" version sacrifices a bit of reach for a bit more belly.

Definately the scariest knife I own.

Check them out at www.tacticalforums.com, www.mdenterprise.com, www.tac-tec.com, www.streetpro.com

Take care,
Derek

MY favorite BIG knife is MY Gerber "BMF".

.

This monster has a 1/4 inch thick, 9 inch long blade, is about 14 inches long "over-all", and has a very comfortable "Hypolon" (rubber) handle.

Sadly, this excellent knife was discontinued by Gerber a few years ago, but I got really lucky, and bought one from a local pawn-shop for $65 a couple of months ago.

Check out Jerry Hossom (http://www.hossom.com)

I'm not one to count on the intimidation factor in any knife, but Jerry has a few that might even change my mind. As about "The Snipper".

Cameron, it sounds like you really like Mr. Ralph's knife; why not give him a shout and see what he'd want to stretch the blade on that fighter he pictured?

Cameron,

Will this do?

The .5" sharpened top swedge at the tip should produce some interesting results. Actually, I will be testing the backcutting and penetration capability of this against the A/F Covert, with a sharpened top edge, in the near future.

Big fighters come in all shapes and sizes.

Go to a military museum and look at the renaissance stuff. This period of history saw some serious sword/knife fighting practices. Try to handle some of the stuff to get a feeling for them.
Then look at the modern fighting knives being produced.
From the two you can decide what feels good for you.

What are you looking for a short sword or long knife?

I cannot get my head round fighting knives that do not have good handguards. Without a guard they are offensive weapons. I also stuggle with the idea of fighting knives with less than six inch blades. I think of these as last resort self protection knives.

I think you really want a survival knife with a combat style blade. A Chris Reeve Project type.

Try looling at Ray Ennis' stuff. He has a variety of knives in 440C that are just what you're looking for.

After reading all the replies to this post to date, I'm curious why no one has even mentioned Randall Made Knives?

Would echo Derek's comment on Mad Dog's Panther. It snap cuts very effectively and believe me it will be the "scariest", most intimidating blade I've ever seen whipped out. The Dundee rig he mates with the blade makes carrying and concealing fairly easy in clothes heavier than tshirt and shorts.

Once you handle one you'll be hooked.

Bob
