I understand that the term "best" is subjective but I would like to know what the highly regarded custom folders are between $500-1000.

+1 for Diskin.....

Another very serious consideration is a Bruce 'Bing' Binghenheimer folder, he makes an excellent custom folder and his own superb Damascus.

I have several of the aforementioned Makers folders and they are all outstanding. :)

If you can be patient and procure a knife from the Maker, instead of the secondary market, you be MANY $$$'s ahead considering some Makers knives sell for 2-5x what their 'table price' is. ;)

You can get a lot for your money from Alan Davis. If you are lucky you can find an Andrew Demko!! There are a lot of good ones for under the $1000 range. Kevin :D

If you can get it directly from the maker then Jake Hoback A15! Or a Justin Turpin Strife!

If you can get them at maker's prices, you can get something from almost anyone for under $1000. RJ Martin, Bob Terzuola, Brad Southard, Brian Fellholter, Kirby Lambert, Michael Raymond etc etc etc all start under $1000 until they get to the secondary market.

If you want good stuff that is semi-available and affordable, check out Tobin Smith, Matt Diskin, John W. Smith, Michael Vagnino and Ray Laconico. They are all make amazing knives that even on the secondary market are in your price range.

add Thorburn to the above names.

at that price range there is no "best" without taking your own personal preferences into consideration.

There's one more maker that i think truly deserved to be mentioned here:
Elliot Williamson of Ferrum Forge. He is spoilt with mega steels!
