Is there a preferred Damascus steel/maker/pattern? I see many different styles from multiple makers, is there a standard? What differentiates between cheap and expensive types? I am looking at getting some knives with this but don't know much about it.

Devin thomas and chad nichols are two of the top damascus guys. As for production damasteel in sweden and alabama damascus are popular choices for lower cost varieties. For me the first two guys are where its at. I dont think you will see a huge performance advantage with any damascus. I basically view it as pretty first and foremost. I prefer san mai style damascus that gives the beauty of the layers but the consistency by using a single type of steel at the core for the cutting edge. Thats just my preference and isnt based on any extensive testing.

The damascus made by Devin Thomas, Jerry Rados and Robert Eggerling always seemed to me to have the cleanest and aesthetically pleasing patterns.

As for cutting, the only ones I have experience with are Devin Thomas Raindrop and Rob Thomas Reptilian. They both took a very good edge and cut well, I had no problems with chipping, rolling or premature dulling with light to moderate tasks.

Another co-sign for Devin Thomas. I edc his damascus and would really like to get a kitchen knife set from him in the future. I've had a damasteel blade and wasn't very impressed with it.

I see you in the CRK sub from time to time. With all these Devin Thomas recommendations, I hope to see you pick up a DT Sebenza or Mnandi!
