Just curious about your best story. I think I just scored big time. Will post pics in 4-5 days on arrival. My best part is that one of the 3 knives made like the one I just bought got stolen in transit by Postal Workers. I know what I paid and I had this knife I got at auction sent directly to the maker for refinish/repair as needed. Turns out it was in nearly perfect shape and he recalled selling it originally for almost 1600$ more than I got it at auction. Now, finally I really got a score online.

Though not the most expensive piece, for 19.95 shipped this is probably the best deal...

Bob 'Sky' Hajovsky chute knife:

So far I haven't gotten a "great steal" on a custom. I've pretty much paid what they're worth.

But here's my first attempt:

Chefget, I'll give you $25 for that Sky Hajovsky beauty and I'll pay shipping....Deal????

Awhile back I got a 4 3/4" Pronghorn by Ed Fowler for $400.00. I think that it was a good deal. Jim Treacy

I once won on Ebay a mint, fully, Simon Lytton engraved, double bolster Centofante lockback, with killer white pearl scales, worth about $1600, paid $800. I did end up trading it though, for an approx. $1600 knife I liked more. :) My best knife deal for sure.

Mr. Treacy,
If your knife was the same one I saw, sold thru Voyles auctions, on ebay about 6 yrs. ago. I kicked myself for not bidding on it. Best price I've ever seen since.. Good catch. (Post or email a photo if you can)

While there are definitely some good deals to be had on Ebay, there is always a chance the knife is being misrepresented in some way, or worse, the seller is a scam artist, so obviously some care and research is advisable to anybody buying nice knives through Ebay, but that being said, I think if you're careful and always look at the seller's feedback, Ebay can be fairly safe and sometimes you do get a very good deal.

IMO, the odds of getting ripped off by a seller with excellent, long term feedback, like approx. 1000+ feedbacks with a 99%+ rating, are pretty low, and really, there is at least some risk involved in buying knives from almost any source.

Not on auction, but right here on BF I picked up a Carson M21 and a Carson Stellite M16 twofer for $600.00. That was about 3 years ago.

If I had only kept them.......:( :( :(

Probabaly it would be an engraved Fred Carter lockback for $500...or maybe the black pearl Busfield for $550...or the engraved pearl Carter sidelock for $650 or was is the blacklip Sawby Swift for $465?:D

I manage to get a good one on ebay every once in a while. This has to be the best one though. A Remington Orange Blossom with MOP. $174.00. I turned down a $500.00 profit on this one at Blade last year.

Just one.

An 11" bladed three bar composite damascus knife by Ed Caffery with an ironwood handle.

Saw it with a high bid of 400, bid 500 and went to bed thinking I would not come close to winning it.

I got lucky.

maybe not the best steal as it wasnt a purchase, but the best surprise find was actually the one that got me into knives again after losing touch during my teens and early 20s....

About 4 years ago my uncle passed away. I inherited a small black box full of knives. 99% were production models....nothing special beyond who owned them....then at the bottom I found three little pouches. One held a yet-to-be-identified maker's knife that I still carry to this day. Another had a tiny custom irvory slipjoint, and the last was the best, as I pulled from it a 1970's Joe Kious slipjoint that had never been outside that pouch. Knowing nothing, I looked up Joe and my jaw hit the floor when I saw what some of his knives brought. I thought to myself "it'd be cool to learn how to make knives" and a few years later, here I am!

Not sure if this counts, but it was the best find ive ever made, and the value of rekindling my interest and it spawning a hobby that i truely now love as a result of something passed on by a deceased family member is something that can never be measured.

Not on Ebay, because I don't frequent Ebay, but best deal on a custom was the Ray Rogers Chupacabra I got for $175 off. Very nice- not to mention an absolute monster folder...

I know every time someone starts a thread like this I'm gonna see Gus and that knife pop up.
I remember that auction. I had about 600 in the bank and almost bid on it. But I didn't think I had a chance in hell at it, so why bother. I almost cried when I saw what it went for.
Great score, Bastid.

My best off of ebay so far is a Trace Rinaldi sharkstooth. Turns out to be one of his first 40 knives. Got it for $75 or so.

I remember hearing a story as it unfolded about a woman who had a small Case knife she listed on eBay. One of those retreived from 'grandpa's tackle box' after he died.

She expected about $30 for it. In only the first day the bidding stopped at $800 and she was bombarded with offers and queries. At this point she had consulted with some aquaintance who had a clue. Apparently she had the holy grail of Case's. She held tight and the bidding closed at around $1700 I believe.

I think Gus heard this story also. Help me along...

I heard about a big boarhunter made by a MS that somone snagged for a great price :p .Maybe you know that story,Coop. Please do let us know :D :D .

A Ray Kirk JS stamped Bolo Machete for $250 last year, and a Busse BM-E for $350 recently. Both are great users.

Jim,

I did not hear about that one. I'll ask "Calvin". :D

Here is one in the opposite direction (not Custom and garage sale special rather than ebay).

Both of these are xx era (1940 to 65) are as close to mint as a knife that old comes in those conditions. I would call them near mint. Not bad for 7 bucks. If you have not had the chance to handle one, the modern runs are not even close to being in the same ballpark.
