Best deal on a Spyderco I ever got

Hi-

I have been sharply (HA!) curtailing my knife purchases, however, I couldn't pass this one up. As mentioned in a previous thread, Smokey Mountain Knife Works is still selling Rookies in G-10 for $39.99. I just received mine, and have to say for 40 bucks, it's an incredible deal. ATS-55 blade steel, nicely textured G-10 handles, solid lock and backspacer, single steel liner, adjustable pivot, black pocket clip (a plus for me, I don't care for the "look at me" chrome), tip up carry, and very smooth action. An all around very solid knife, and reminds me of the Wegner Jr. due to the textures and solid feel. About the same size as well. In fact, I keep trying to flip it over to release the liner when I close it! (liner lock vs. lockback)

I'd definitely recommend one of these for someone looking into getting a high quality knife without breaking the bank. Not to mention a great way to get into Spydercos. I did ask the nice lady who took my order if they had many left and she said there were still quite a few. Plain and combo edges, btw.

I will second that. Rookie g-10, Calypso Jr.(micarta), and Wegner Jr rank at the top of the 3" mass produced knives. Knife outlet was selling the Calypso Jr micarta for 39.95 as well. An equally great deal.

Well, I probably paid thru-the-nose for my Rookie, but I got a good deal on a Civilian in January. At a "Cutlery store" in this area, they run a progressive sale after Xmas. For the first 2-weeks it's 20% off List. The next week it's 40% and the final week it was 60%.
I got my Civilian for $80.

While I was in the store that day a phone call came in and a caller beat me to the "Michael Walker Almite" for a discounted price of $170.

Dagnabit, clip point. I told myself no more Spydercos this month. But after mulling over your post, I had to call SMKW and get a Rookie. Couldn't help myself at that price.
Especially since I'm a big fan of the G10 handles.

By the way, does anyone know if the Rookies have been discontinued?

I believe the g-10 rookies have been discontiued. SMKW also has standards for $42. Also a bargain. I hate that Spyderco discontinued the rookies and standards. I discontinuing these will leave a void in the line. Something between all the small and large Spyderco's.

Rookies have been discontinued, hence the discounts. Great little package - rock solid, blade lenghth same as a Delica, but shorter & slimmer handle. (How'd they do that ?) Blade appears smaller than Delica (a plus around the sheep) due to slimmer profile, less pronounced hole bulge. Hate to say it, because the Delica is a quality piece, but since I paid about the same, I can compare it to the Rookie - Delica feels downright cheap in comparison. G10 with single steel liner just blows away Zytel in solidity and quality feel. When I got the Delica, I could immediately tell the improvement over the ABS POS's in my drawer, but G10 is a big step up. You pay for it in a little more bulk, though. Delica with clip removed is now my everyday, in-pocket business casual carry, since without the clip it is soooo slim and light. Rookie is jeans carry.

Due to it's slimmer profile and slimmer opening hole access, I'm tempted to take a half-round file to the Rookie's handle to access the opening hole easier. Any recommendations or warnings ?

Don't forget the G-10 Harpy that SMKW has on sale for $42.99! Mine came in the mail Saturday, and I must say, it is a *sweet* knife. Super solid handle, a bit more filling than the rookie's, and that nifty hawksbill blade. Model No. SCP08GS - it's not listed online or in any of the recent catalogs.

I wonder, how do you all find out about these bargains, other than bladeforums? Someone have a "source" @ SMKW?

Hey Clip point thanks for the heads-up! I ordered a pair--one plain, one toothy. Anybody have a web address for SMKW? The old one I have doesn't work anymore. It wasn't any good when it did work anyway. Prin, I get flyers from them occassionally but I've never seen any great deals like the Rookie, Standard or Merlin in them.

I got one of each guys - not really crazy about the toothy blade for the rookie but I will learn to love it and that standard is a piece of work to die for!
Love it

- The rookie is a bit smaller - but that's ok too- and both from under a "c"
Thanks to Smokey Mountain Knife! Gotta love it.

Other good deals going at Smokey Mountain Knife Works right now:
* Serrated Endura in AUS-8 with fiberglass reinforced nylon resin handles going for $29.99.
* Rescue in AUS-8 stainless steel fiberglass reinforced nylon resin handles for $24.99.
I may just pick up a Rescue for the glove box or boating.

Thanks for the tip guys, just ordered a Rookie in plain-edge. Now for the 4 week wait...

Shawn,

More like 3 days if you're in the states. My past two orders from SMKW were both here within three days, at least. I see you're in Canada, but why do your shipments take four weeks? Is there a leg of the journey that involves a pack mule?

Well, when you get it, enjoy your Rookie. It's a great knife. In fact, it's become my everyday carry.

Guyon,

I assume that they are shipping Parcel Post or something along those lines; unfortunately, the person taking my order couldn't tell me what method they use. But $10 USD? Better be guarded by security for that price.
