What would you consider to be the best defensive folding knife of all time?

My choice is the Benchmade 806 D2 AFCK. It's got the best shape for hanging onto and it's super-fast out of the pocket into action. I consider it the best defensive knife of all time.

Although the axislock is probably stronger than a titanium linerlock, i think the Emerson CQC13 would be better suited for self defense.
Thanks to the wave feature it will open quicker than the Benchmade and the handle is also much more secure.

Not to be a "spoil-sport", but it isn't the knife, it's the mindset and knowledge of technique. If one is willing and able to possibly kill another human in a bloody rage, then a steak knife will beat a bowie in the right hands.

This often asked question on the forum reminds of an old friend of mine that got into photography. He bought all the best equipment and spent thousands on his gear. When I would go to his house, that is what he would show me, not the pictures he took with it. I also had another friend that was a professional photographer. He also has very good equipment but he could take much better pictures with a disposable camera than my other friend could take with his $800 Nikon.

Moral to the story: as is often said by many woman, "it ain't the meat, it's the motion".

But after you learn how, what, and are willing to live with what might happen, then possibly a BM Ruckus or Camillus CUDA 5.5". There are plenty of great folders but I perfer a fixed blade. Specifcally the Camillus CQB.

Regards

I never had to defend myself with a knife, so my thoughts are quite theoretical.

The AFCK can be used defensive without using the blade, because of the long handle. A serious option if you don´t conider self defense with the worst scenario.

There are other knives. Sure, but i guess the AFCK for tactical folders is something like Metallica for Heavy metal rock.

custom? either a crawford perfigo or a emerson specwar CQC8 ZBG.

production?? a emerson CQC12.

the guy who invented the AFCK used to post here and claimed the 800 was superior to the 806 due to the axis lock being more likely to be disengaged than the liner lock (he said the grind down the buttons on the axis FWIW) but i do like all the AFCK's myself, and i think the '06 was better, but what do i know lol.

Folding knives are poor weapons. The type of knife doesn't really matter anyway, if you really have to fight, mindset, technics and physique counts. You can easily kill someone with a cheap chinese POS. If you really have to defend yourself with a folder, go for something big, stout with non-slippery handles.

I'm not going to put forth an answer because I do not have any idea about the best. It does seem like there are plenty of choices though! My response is to say that I have a BM 610 Rukus w/axis lock and I have taken the lockbar out and ground it to be flush with the bolsters on each side. It still works great but now the "problem" of accidental unlocking with the thumb dragging across it is greatly reduced. Also mirror polished each end so that you have to really grab it with the thumb and forefinger to pull back. Otherwise your thumb just glides by.

Now, if my arm were being twisted to make a choice I would have to say that my newly arrived R.J. Martin Devastator would be the choice with its framelock lockup and that amazing Martin edge! Damn thing will almost cut you just looking at it!!

i have to back up bladeprince`s post, it is more up to you than what you carry, i was once attacked by four guys, had brassknuckles in my pocket but i never really thoght of useing it.. was way to busy dodging kicks and punches to go digging in my pockets..

but if someone comes up to you with a knife or something i would like to have a some sort of wave action knife ready, i`d choose my Emerson commander

I would have to say one of my C.S. Voyagers. Either the XL or the large. Both knives lock up excellant, grip ergo's aren't bad, they are cheap, you can't get finger prints off the scales!:), and they are sharp. I own a ton of knives and edc a EKI Comm or 11, but if I had to choose just a s.d. knife without other considerations thrown in the mix, I would be hard pressed to find 2 better purely s.d. knives. They are ground thin for excellant slicing ability, they are both pointy for penetration, the locks are very sturdy, and they don't slip around in you hand when wet. keepem sharp

Scott Self and Larry Chew designed a semi-custom production knife that really never took off. It was made for 3 years then money problems set in and caused the break up of his new knife company. TiNives.
They had a unique ceramic roller ball opening system.Self polishing. The more you use it the faster and smoother it opens and closes. Mine is as fast as a Bali-Song now. I can open it and close it with no thought. The effort needed to move the thumb stud to a locked position is not quite a nudge. It is swell shaped like a ocean wave and fills the palm of my XXL hands well. Its blade is CM154 and 4.25 inches of mirror polished threat, standing opposite it would send chills down my spine. I guess most any knife in the hands of a shaking ,sweating, strung out junkie type brandished for the purpose of gaining money from me would do the trick.Or how about a nice OTF knife?

Peace.

Like others said, without training, the best knife is the one clipped in the pocket on the same side you carry a firearm.

It is a sad fact that the this is becoming a telltale of the state of progression in knife enthusiasm. First, cool cheap knives, then appreciation of mid range quality, after which, the tactical "Can my knife kill faster than yours?" questions.

Historically, the debate ended when metallic cartridge firearms became a reliable self defense tool. About 1870. Since they don't teach that in public school anymore, it's left to old farts on the internet to get the word out.

I'm glad to see this forum putting out a mature response to the question.

I'm still searching for the ultimate. Been at it for years.

BTW, I have the linerlock version of the AFCK. Must admit, I love it more than the Axis-lock version.

I'll take the Manix, big wide bladed, strong lock and braindead easy to use. I had to fend two feral dogs (Black lab and chow) with the knife in one hand and my wife behind me. Needless to say in real life, it cuts deep, fast and stays sharp.

I also like the 806. I think it could use just a bit more of a gaurd though, and some grippier g-10. I'm also a big fan of the chinook-2,-3, and the cqc-12,-13. Those monsters from coldsteel are neat too.

There is no such thing as the best of anything highend. The best stereos, cars and such can all be compared with no clear winner. Same goes for knives. The reality of knives is that they are only good SD weapons by luck or alot of skill. If you develop the skill then the knife that fits your skill will be the best. If you train for 20 years with traditional double karambits then a large bowie will NOT be a better SD choice. Therefore the question is impossible to answer. Also I agree with tirod3. Some people like small wharnie blades some like tantos and some like bowies. Most have never killed anyone with an knife and are just guessing anyways.

I have to say that any sharp object is a weppon. Even a small pocket knife like a delica put in the right persons hand with the mindset of destroying the attacker would be devastating.

I like my spyderco yo. Now if it was waved.....O BOY watch out!

Now wheres that cut off disk??
