We did a LOT of looking around & comparing features & prices.....came up with the Nikon Coolpix 950. Does macro, 2.1, and best price was on the net thru one of the dealers on C-Net.com

The "best" digital camera changes almost weekly due to the rapid advancement of the technology. I suggest that you go to the rec.photo.digital newsgroup and look around to find the current "best" or "best buy". You'll find more informed opinions about digital cameras there than anywhere on the web.

FWIW - a friend of mine recently picked up a 2 Megapixel Canon for about $400 (with battery pack and charger) that he's very happy with. I've also heard that the Kodak DC 280 is a good buy. I just keep going with my old Kodak DC 120 that I got a couple of years ago.

Check the date, because the answer changes daily. I have been looking at digital a good bit and about the time I get ready to buy a new model comes out. I was all set to but a Kodak DC290 (lowest price $600) when Kodak came out with the 4800. So now I start all over with the decision making. Go with the highest resolution you can. You may not need it al of the time but when you do it will be there. Also check if the camera will be able to use an external flash.
If you buy one let us know how it works out.

polaroid photomax pdc 640 comes with
soft wear and you can get it from walmart

and the sofr wear is simple and easy to use.

its like everthing else in life....although technology is rocketing towards the moon, the best stuff is still expensive....you dont have a price ball park.....but I have a Sony mav 91 and i love it....$900.especially cause it uses floopies and I can take them out and stick them in my puter....on the other hand you are limited by how many pics you can get on a floopy.....but its very simple and floopies are cheap! all the pics on my site are taken with it.....the other sony mavs are comparable and start at $500, but im no techno type so i can only give a limited view.

Just a thought, but if you just want to digitize images of knives why not try using a Scanner if you have one?. My modest Agfa Snapscan produces images from flat-ish 3D objects far better than the average digicam. OK so you can't take it out in the garden and snap the family! but for fairly flat objects like knives it works great. If you want/need a camera for other stuff then I've heard the Nikons are pretty good.
