A colleague was raving about Canon's latest digital camera, the G1.

He said it is currently the best, or about the best in the digital market right now.

I know very little about digital cameras.

Anyone has any experience with the Canon G1. I was told it is THE digital at the moment with some awesome features.

The G1 looks really nice!!
I'll throw in my 2 cents - my father has the Canon powershot S20 - very nice too. I recently bought a Kodak DC4800 (also reviewed at the site listed above). The Canon takes great pictures, but they don't compare to the Kodak (both are 3+ megapixel cameras). My reading on the internet, and talking to a couple of camera store owners, rated the Kodak CCD's as one of the best. Also, the DC4800 has a $100 rebate, which puts it $400 cheaper than the G1. The G1 has more features, and Canon makes good stuff. Just thought I add my experiences...

The G1 has recently garnered high praise from a lot of sources- including Popular Photography which said (paraphrasing) that it had the best color reproduction of any camera they've ever used, both film and digital. Had the G1 been readily available when I bought my S20 I'd probably have gone for it, but I've been more than happy with the Canon S20. 3.34MP, lot of features- the only thing it can't do is a manual focus. It's lacking some of the features of the G1 and the pricing reflects it- it's also much more pocketable and was recently on sale for as low as $499. Assuming they haven't closed the doors yet (.com problems from what I heard), you can see some of the pictures I've taken with it at:

If the color seems a little washed out, it's because I've been taking most of the inanimate pics under 12 T8's. I've been very happy with that camera- plus it takes the IBM Microdrive which was a big plus for me. I can put over 400 pictures at the highest resolution on my 1GB MD and still have room left over.

Wow, I too have an S20. Looks like a S20 owner's convention. A friend of mine has a G1 and those manual controls are great. The lens is one of the biggest that I've seen...far bigger than any Kodak or Nikon, (just to throw out a couple of names), and the ability to use ISO 50 is pretty neat. The ability to use a 1 gig IBM microdrive really sweetens the deal.

Actually I have the Kodak 4800. I have been a fan of Kodak cameras until now. I mean the camera is nice and has all the features I want, but they removed the scripting software from previous cameras. I would imagine the larger lens would help the camera out a lot. The ability to easily add an external flash is great. Now I want to sell my Kodak 4800 and buy the G1.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 880 and I simply love it. I'm continually shocked at the level of detail that is captured by this camera. Plus, the best part is how compact it is. I took it with me on a vacation to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. I had it in my pocket the whole time, and took a lot of nice shots while hiking a trail in the Canyon. All sorts of light conditions, excellent results through and through. Highly recommended.

If we´re talking video, go Canon; if we´re talking still pictures, Nikon´s got the best one by far; you will get film-quality pics.
