I've been carrying a small sebenza, benchmade 750 pinnacle, kershaw leek as my main favorite carriers over the last few years and am looking for something along those line again, both price dependent and independent. I was hoping for something cheaper because I'm brutal on them. I really hope I don't have to take out a new large sebenza and have to go and cut shingles with it.
So any thoughts will be welcomed.
Thanks,
Jeff

Maybe a Buck 112 or a Spyderco Endura II?

Or if a combo edge is okay, then maybe a Spyderco Native SS.

Good luck,
Allen.

How about the BM 732 Ares? I am planning on EDCing this new toy when I send in my Large Sebbie for reblasting. ;)

If you are cutting shingles I would go straight to Wal-Mart and pick up a medium priced fixed blade knife and use it. On those days you know you are going to be extremely rough on a knife just pack the fb along with you.

Welcome to the forums Jeff.I guess you could drive tacks with a Rolex watch too,but I'd re-think using a Sebenza for cutting shingles. You are better served with a Stanley utility knife for under $8.00.tom. :)

Spyderco Endura. I just got another after being without for 2 years, and it's great. They're inexpensive, thin, light, big (but not too big), and cuts like...um...a Spyderco! You can't go wrong with it. :D

Thanks guys, but how about only frame locks, and maybe only titanium handlles?
I wish I didn't have to use use an expensive knife to cut shingles, but sometimes ya gotta what ya gotta do, as stupid as it is sometimes.
Thanks again,
jeff

If I had enough extra income to spend on a Sebenza,I'd probably have enough to pay someone else to cut those shingles. But I don't.I still would leave the Sebbie in my pocket and use a cheaper knife for nasty cutting/scraping jobs if I owned one.tom. :)

So, I guess fixed blades are out? If not, the Busse Active Duty. About 1/2 the cost of a large Sebbie with almost exactly the same blade (shape, length) and 1/2" shorter than an open Sebbie to boot. Cut as many shingles as you want, no worries.

I carry both at the same time and use the Busse for the heavier work, although the AD is just a bit thicker than the Sebbie it is no 'prybar' by any stretch. If all I had was the Sebbie for rough stuff, well, I didn't buy it just to be admired. It gets used.

If it's gotta be a folder I'd say a Sebbie or check out a Firetac from Rick Hinderer (sp?). I only own 1 folder, but his work has me thinking about 2. Slightly cheaper than the Sebbie, but not a lot. Perhaps someone can post a link?

Rob

The kershaw Vapor II is a good folder for $20.00, and has earned quite a reputation as a beater.

There is no best EDC. Like the man says...."it depends". In your case you have already found the best. Did you wear out your small Sebenza? Unlikely. Stick with it.

Well, if only framelocks, and only Ti handles, get yourself a Buck 172 Mayo. You can get them used sometimes, still for not a bad price if you have to buy online. As for Rick's knives, while I wouldn't hesitate to use them, you won't be able to use Rick's knives for a task you won't use a Sebenza for. If I had both, I'd use the Sebenza in a heartbeat b/c I just wouldn't care what happened to it. NOT the same with a Hinderer. Great knives, and definitely users, but c'mon, if you can't think of using a plain grey handled Sebbie for cutting cruddy stuff, how will you feel about one of Rick's beautifully anodized knives? 172 seems to make the most sense for your application- IF you can't use fixed blades. If you CAN use fixed blades, try something like the Becker Necker or a Swamp Rat. You can pry with the swamp rat, and its a good steel. Why do y'all think I carry fixed blades??? I'd carry a SR if they'd make something in the 3" range. They don't, though.

Sincerely,
Anthony

Edited to add: "Best" is what's best for you and your application. My "Best" comes in the form of a Fixed, locking folder, AND slipjoint. That's just me.

...now that's some sound advice. :)

For me the best EDC is one that I keep going back to again and again over time. My EDC changes depending on the season, and my mood and also on what I may be making at any given time. I've carried my Wenger SAK and Vic Swiss Tool more religiously than any other knives I guess but as far as user single blade one hand openers I have a Ka-Bar Dozier Thorn that has seen a lot of pocket time, and my Spyderco Delicas also. One is SE one is PE.

I have recently been carrying my modified Fallkniven U2 a lot since adding a pocket clip and thumb stud to it and also my upgraded Salt 1 by Spyderco has been getting a lot of use. I really like that H1 steel I must say. It is so nice to be able to work outside all day sweating up a storm and not have to worry about you knife. But when I'm in a whittling mood I'll carry one of my Wharncliff blades or even a three blade slip joint from time to time.

Come to think of it there probably is no such thing as a 'best' EDC knife. I have a Small Sebenza and a Bill Vining custom made folder that are both top of the line $350 plus folders and they see little use these days because of one reason or another. Just too many toys I guess.

How about a nice Victorinox SAK?

If you want a locking blade, how about a Victorinox Trekker?

I guess I'm weird. i carrry 2 to 3 knives every day. Gerber multitool(great for shingles),a spyderco stretch with combo edge, and a small fixed blade made by me.(kind of resembles a Strider wp) I have a knife for almost anything this way.Ok so I am weird but prepared for anything.

Why would you beat up on a Sebbie and not a Hinderer? LOL I don't think either maker makes knives just to be admired.

I guess I'm too old to much give a sh!t anymore. I have em, I use em. Haven't driven tacks with my Rolex ... yet. The need never came up. But after 20+ yrs on my wrist and doing what I do for a living, it's held up pretty well. My Dad's is going on 45 yrs and for a good chunk of those he was a lineman. Still wearing it. We gave it to him Christmas 1964 and it cost $250 (a LOT of bucks back then).

My point is, you buy quality once and use it. I just don't have enough money to keep buying tools over and over again and to me, a knife is a tool. Especially if you're laying out that kind of $$$$. For that, it had BETTER cut shingles if the need arose. Yes, I would get a cheaper knife to do the job if I could, you don't abuse quality tools if you can avoid it. LOL I'm not going to subject it to unnecessary abuse if something else that will do the job is there, but, if nothing else is?

I think Rick would be proud to see one of his knives 'well used'. I hope the Sebbie holds up like the Rolex, but I've only been EDC'ng it for about 1 1/2 yrs. So far, so good, time will tell.

Wetdog, If I had a Hinderer, I'd use it for everything. My point was more that if jfb club couldn't bring himself to pound on a Sebenza I couldn't see how he'd manage to pound on a Hinderer. I agree that a knife is a tool, and you don't abuse tools if you don't have to, but if the guy can't get over a scratch or two on the more sterile platform of the Sebenza, how is he going to manage it with Rick's knife? THAT was more my point than which one I'd beat up on. And I think you're right, Rick WOULD love to see one of his knives "well-used."

Sincerely,
Anthony
