Fairly recently I got my first knife with 154CM. I'm debating between sharpening at 15 or 20 degrees. I usually go for 20 but most of my experience is with AUS8 and 8Cr13mov. Will I get better performance with 15 or be at a greater risk for chipping? I'll use this as an EDC and for tougher jobs.

Locust, Might better stay with the 20*. If any could handle it the 154CPM could but I don't know how heavy use cutting you do . DM

Are you talking 15/20 degrees per side? It would depend. What are you using the knife for.

Yes 15 or 20 per side

In all honesty it will usually be used for mundane tasks like string, food, boxes, plastic banding, paracord, and the like. However it's possible it would be used for carving/shaving wood, shaving twigs of of branches, zip ties, and maybe on very rare occasions opening a bag of concrete.

Have you given any thought to: 20 degree micro bevel with a 15 degree back bevel for the EDC. I think it can be the best of both worlds.

Locust, For the use your stating and that steel I think it could handle a 16-18* edge .
But I agree w/ rptt as well . DM

154CM will handle 15 degrees per side with ease, and cut very well. I wouldn't go to 20 unless you plan in using it in place of an axe, prybar, etc.

15 degrees per side has worked on almost every folder I have owned for hard use. Cutting thick twine, plastic, concrete bag (usually the spade will do that).. and occasional wiring, wood etc.. However , i use a 20 degree micro bevel...

If your not doing anything hard a 5-10 degree edge and a 15 degree micro bevel is fine and won't chip out.(unless you start forgetting common sense.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Currently I'm leaning toward 15. First I'll use a marker to check the bevel. Since the knife in question is a Manix 2 from Spyderco it's possible the grind may already be at 15 anyway.
