I am in the market for a new knife. I have always stuck with cheapo knives but want to get something nice. I was looking at the Commander BTS. However just read a review that really trashed the knife. Being that I do not have a vast knowledge I am hoping someone here can help me with my decision. Thanks

I own two non-waved CQC-7As with drop points and I love them. The only thing that I would want beside them is the same blade shape with the wave feature.

Where did you read the bad review on the Commander? I've been thinking about buying that one as well and hadn't heard anything bad about them.

It is a small hook on the back edge of the blade that you can use to "catch" your pocket edge when drawing the knife. It makes for a very fast opening, much faster than an auto.

Go over to Emerson's web site and he has several videos showing how it works. Seems like if you were fending off an attacker and couldn't access your primary firearm you could draw it pretty easily.

A few of the LEOs at Sig Forum have commented about carrying a waved CQC-7/Commander offside for this purpose.

Thanks for the link. :)

PS While I LOVE my Emerson's there is a waved Spyderco Endura out at $55-60.00. For that price you could easily carry one in each pocket.

first here is emersons website www.emersonknives.com

I wouldnt rely on that review. Ive owned emerson knives for almost a year and have yet to have a problem with them. They are meant to take a beating and accept it well.

heres a couple picture of my combat Karambit, commander mini with left handed clip and regular lefty commander

hope that helps you to decide

Anyone reccommend me going to another knife maker or sticking with Emerson? I just feel like I want something of high quality. And, if Emerson is suggested.....is the Commander a good knife for my needs or is there another Emerson that I should consider? Thanks

well, fwiw, i carry a waved emerson cqc13 strong side for the more mundane tasks.

i carry a waved combat kerambit support side to defend weapon takeaways and such. the finger ring limits the probability i will drop it and increases the chances it will open and provides a positive reverse grip for slashing.

The blade on the Commander can be flat ground to the spine, which will improve cutting efficiency. I think it is a good knife, but the grind needs improving.

Try contacting Tom Krein, he's here on this forum, to see if he'll regrind the blade for you. I know he's done a few Spyderco's and his work is super clean -good guy too.

Have look at these recurve knives. It has the hook etc. It works out cheaper than a emerson and it is custom knife. Don't know if theu ship their knives but you can always try. .http://www.mtknives.co.za/

The wave is pattented. This is something that Mr. Emerson came up with, lets reward him instead of some one who can't come up with theri own original work!

When you buy work that has been copied I feel that we are hurting the industry as we are rewarding those that are not the creative/inovative makers!

I would suggest the Emerson Commander. I carried a box stock one for some time! I still have a Waved Emerson that I carry on a regular basis.

Emerson is a good company with good products, made RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OLD U.S. of A.!!

Tom

I have been carrying a Emersom Commander for close to 8 years now! I use it for defense, if ever needed, but mainly as a utility knife. This is a great knife. I have about 10 Emersons but I always revert to carrying the Commander.

As per the sharpness out of the box, you can shave with these babies. IMO the quality of the Emerson knives is superior to most of the the other knives out there.

Buy it. If you do not like it you can always find a buyer.

why would ya post a link to someone who is fraudulantly copying the wave, an emerson patented feature, and post it on an emerson forum??

i wouldnt have one, myself, even if it was free, get the real thing if ya want a waved knife.

I carry an SOCFK-A or HD-7 at work (LEO)- I won't carry any folding knife other than a waved Emerson while I'm on duty- once you've trained with one you will not accept any substitute- nothing is faster (and that includes autos)...my brother- also an LEO- carries a CQC-11 and loves it... the only question is wether or not you like a chisel grind- I prefer a V-grind and thats why I carry the SOCFK-A most of the time

An Emerson CQC7 without the wave has served me fine...I recently bought a waveless Mini CQC7 and I like it as well. I don't really care for the wave as I ruined more than my fair share of uniform trousers pulling it out. Also, depending on where you carry your knife, the wave may not be practical. I have carried my knives clipped to the top of my uniform shirt just below my adams apple and in my back pocket...either case, the wave is not practical for me. I recently bought a waveless Commander, which is sweet! I am not a fan of the wave. Thats my two cents! Be safe!

I've carried the CQC7B for a few years. Its perfect, fast out of the pocket and sharper than dragons teeth. Emerson is the best IMHO!

From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson_Knives
After a disastrous helicopter crash in 1999 resulting in the deaths of six Marines and one sailor, the US Navy performed an assessment of their equipment and decided among other things that they needed a new Search and Rescue knife. The Ka-bar knives issued to the SBU's (Special Boat Units) catastrophically failed to cut the Marines' free from their webbing.

The Navy, went to Emerson who designed and fabricated a working prototype within 24 hours. They found that it met their needs and the model was dubbed the SARK (Search and Rescue Knife). The SARK is a folding knife with a warncliffe-style blade and a blunt tip designed so a rescuer could cut free a trapped victim without stabbing them, the knife also features Emerson's Wave. Seeing another need in the police community, Emerson replaced the blunt end of the SARK with a pointed end and named it the P-SARK or Police Search And Rescue Knife. The Ontario, California Police Department consulted Emerson to produce written policy for the carry and deployment of the P-SARK knives in their department.

While I have a soft spot for the Commander and CQC7s for your line of work the P-SARK would be ideal.
