I'm working on a handle for a hidden tang blade that I had made for me. What is the best "epoxy" out there to secure it in the wood. Right now I have jb weld but I think there might be some better ones out there

Thanks!

I find JB works for me, too. Seems that West Systems is the favorite here. I use it on every knife, somewhere and haven't had failure, yet. Advertised as a little more elastic than most. That helps resist shock, I think. You can get it on line.

Thanks! Is there a "model" of west systems that is preferred for knives? Their website has a bunch for different applications

West System G flex
Brownells Acraglas
System Three T-88

While others may work, these three epoxies are widely accepted by knife makers as appropriate for our applications.

I've had good luck with West Systems Six 10(very similar to G-flex).Check out their data sheet, might be a little stronger actually. It's very fast to use and has a long pot life.It comes with a caulking style tube that dispenses equal amounts.(don't use the static metering tip, mix by hand).Good luck.Lu. P.S In humid conditions let cure 2 days.

Any of the good Marine epoxy blends will work. West, System 3, Raka, US Composites, etc. West is the most readily available. As for the G-Flex make sure that you DON'T get the super fast 5 minute stuff. I will gum up on you while you watch it. In addition to Brownells, which by all accounts is also some very good stuff, the epoxy used for building custom golf clubs is supposed to be good, but I have that it now comes precolored from places like Golfsmith. Don't use the cheap Home Depot stuff. if yo don't have to

Just curious have any of you guys used rod builders epoxy for things like cord wrapped handles ect? I like the fact it's clear.

Good to see somebody else using Raka epoxy - been using it for years in the boat world.

Ask Andy on the bladebond site - he's an expert on the rod building business and also a knife maker.

I think that is what the Golfsmith stuff is, but with tint added whether you want it or not. same type of application.

Never used it, just know about it. IIRC, thee is another premium marine product called Silvertip.

There are some great ones out there and a lot that don't hold up.
My earliest knives were put together with JB or the similar PC7, and many are still in daily use, four or five years later.
Devcon was one brand I eliminated pretty quickly, along with the Loctite fast drying epoxy.
Now it's G-flex all the way, except for some bolsters/guards, that I do with good old JB or PC7.
Just my experience.
