(I was going to put this in the esee section but i didnt see one)
Hey all you military guys and gals I have a question for you. My buddy just started boot camp for the marines yesterday and I wanted to get him a little something for when he gets out. I was thinking of getting him an esee knife for when he's over seas, but not really sure which one. I realize he'll probably be using it to mostly open boxes and letters or fending off giant spiders, but if he were to find himself in a defensive situation, he would be able to effectively stab a bad guy. Personally I LOVE my esee 4p, but I use it in a bushcraft manner and not sure if it would translate. The esee 3MIL has the window basher but would it be too small? Esee 5 seems too heavy if you already have to lug around all that gear and water, but was built for SERE applications. Anyways thanks for you help

And thank you in advance for your service to our country

You seem to have a pretty good grasp about what knives are used for in that situation.
Id say the ESEE 3 MIL would be a fine choice.
Not the biggest most intimidating butcher knife around, but if he is in the field, he will appreciate not having too much weight to carry.
Soldiers seldom get in a situation, where they have to stab somebody and should that occour, vast amounts of something brown and warm will have hit the fan.
If it doesnt go bang, boom or can be eaten, it generally doesnt get carried. Weight (or the lack there of) is at a premium.
Good luck to him.

Nice gesture.

Honestly I would get him a decent (not expensive) folder or SAK. It would be lighter weight and probably get more use.

What mos (job)? Without knowing that, it's hard to recommend one over another

:thumbup:Esee 6 cp (clip point) is 3/16" thick so it's not too heavy, it comes with a tough thermo plastic sheath(stronger than kydex -made for military use) in black, olive drab, or coyote brown, and with the sharpened clip point, it makes an excellent tali-whacker:D

ESEE 3mil and a nice multi-tool (Victorinox Swisstool or Spirit would be my recommendation, but a Leatherman, SOG Powerlock, or Gerber MP would work well too).

I'll second this.

The most useful ESEE knife, by far, is the ESEE-3. For emergency use, I'd get it serrated and with the sharpened reverse edge (ESEE calls it a "clip point"). ESEE's serrations can be sharpened with a 3/8" file and a standard stone, and they really go through rope and similar materials quickly. The sharpened reverse edge is ideal for defense (or offense or whatever - he's a Marine!). The only thing the serrations aren't good for is whittling wood, and I doubt that is on your buddy's list of chores for the next few years. The '3 is flat and smallish and fits great on a chest rig, make sure to get him the option that comes with MOLLE clips, and maybe send him a $10 TekLok so he can clip it to a belt if he wants.

My nephew is in week 3 at Parris Island and he'll be getting an Ontario Rat 1 folder and Izula II from me. I already gave him a good leatherman last year.

Esee 4 clip point

It's a thicker stronger blade then the 3 and it comes with a kydex sheath rather then a cheap plastic one.

Awesome thanks for all the replies! I'm going to go with the esee 3 MIL and have a buddy of mine match up a kydex sheath with the MOLLE back. Ill go shop around and find a cool SAK to throw in too.

laser-strike has a nice drop point which imo, makes a more spectacular gift.

+1 on the Laser strike. The saber grind makes it even more robust than the 4 and the handle is great

The '3 is a very thin knife, and very difficult to do a good kydex sheath for. It's better off in the original plastic sheath, and they come with MOLLE clips to attach to web gear.
