Best field sharpener?

It really depends on what knives I'm carrying and in what context. These days I mostly use scythe stones for most of my sharpening tasks, but depending on what I'm carrying, where, and doing what with it then some sort of other sharpening equipment might be best.

pull throughs mostly suck, but if your knife is already sharp before hitting the field, they should be able to make it useful again unless maybe battoning wood or soft carbon stell. Then a small stone like thos that came with say Schrade fixed blade sheaths should be plenty sufficient.

EZ lap diamond hone in a brass tube. Tough and last a very long time. I have a couple that I've used for more than 30yrs. I've carried and used DMT Dufolds as well, plastic just doesn't hold up all that well, they are great at home. Just not so great getting beat around in a pack or pocket.

^I'm going to have to get one of those... What's the grit like? Pretty fine? I find myself needing a pretty fine grit out and about just to touch up, unless I do something somewhat dumb.

Duo fold coarse\fine, or fine\ extra fine, depending. The Smith coarse fine for Walmart is an unbeatable deal at 15$ too.

I like the DC4 diamond/ceramic stone as my field sharpener.
Been using one for about 2 years, I would like to try the all ceramic version of the DC4 too.

I bring with me some times a small natural silt stone puck and a small piece of compound.

It depends, if its just my pocket knife and hatchet carbon steel I maintain with ash from the campfire and strop it fresh. If stainless a Norton Crystalon puck, is about the thinnest one on the market and good quality.

WorkSharp field sharpener! I haven't tried every different style/brand but enough. Amazing product. I keep one in my EDC bag and one in my bug out bag. They can be had for roughly 22$ on amazon or around 40 in most sporting goods stores. That EZ lap diamond stone posted above is a good option as well.

DC4, maybe an Arkansas stone or two and a little folding leather strop charged with Flexcut Gold. I figure if my knife was sharp before I headed out it will probably not need more than a touch up on my day trips.

Most of my field work is touch-ups. I carry a piece of the cardboard from a notepad, charged with green compound, in my wallet.

WorkSharp's Field Sharpener... everything you need, from a quick touchup, to sharpening should the need arise.
