I have at home a great apex sharpening, that sees lots of good use.
However, In the field I needed something that could do some good sharpening and didn't take up much space or weight, for hiking a bug outs.

Any recommendations?

for convex edges i use this;

for scandi or flat ground i like the DMT credit card sized plates. they take up almost no space and work well. my main concern with these is accidentally nipping my fingers since they are so thin and somewhat tricky to hang onto. i want to try out some of the balisong style DMT sharpeners.

Spyderco makes a nice double sided ceramic stone in med/fine with a leather slip case. Should work out for most everything in a case where you need to field sharpen.

siguy, nice idea for convex! :D

well, I'll guess wither DMT or spyderco double sided will do more than good for field sharpening.

Thanks guys

I carry a pair of DMT Duo-Fold sharpeners in my back pocket all the time. One is Extra-Coarse/Coarse, the other is Fine/Extra-Fine. Between them, I can do anything from a quick touch up to a complete rebevel anywhere. The handles provide an excellent grip while keeping your fingers away from the sharp stuff.

Has anyone tried the sandpaper strip pulled through the convex blade edge and thigh as you squat down on one leg technique?

Works pretty good with practice and all you need in the feild is a couple rolled up stripes of paper in different grits, or hell 600 is all u really need.

I love the effectiveness as well as the finish of a medium arkansas stone, provided your not sharpening some of these new 'super steel' knives. For example, its useless on my Native (not only does it take forever the S30V wont hold an edge afterwards). On more traditionally performing steels like my Delica (VG-10) or a SAK its perfect, though.
