Have friend looking for what he calls a commercial grade Fillet knife, any suggestions from the pros? price range under 100 bucks

The Microtech is the best fillet knife that I've ever owned/used, and you can find them for under a hundred bucks.

Funny you should recommed that knife I just found it with the help of mschwoeb, thanks, it looks nice and like it would do what its needed for

these knives only cost me $5-15, but I've never found anything I like better htan Normarks/Rapalas. This is the same parent coporation on both of these, or at least used to be. Some Finnish company. Either way, they have always worked great for me. My Rapala has a bit more comfortable handle I'll admit, but the normark ones have shorter blades, which make them a little more useful, depending on the fish.

Have used all three(two normarks, one rapala), for years.

Having used(and resharpened all too frequently) the Rapalas all my life, I would say go for the Microtech fillet knife.

I think the Rapalas is what hes trying to get away from, I recomended the Mikrotech to him, but thinks it may be to short for him, I think the longest it comes in is around 7" blade, and he says hee needs longer for what he does, Salmon, steel head i think is what he fishes. I have no clue i have never had a need for a fillet knife myself, soo the search continues......

I would get the Forschner fillet Knife by Victorinox, high carbon stainless steel 6" blade for around $12, IMO it's all you will ever need. If 6" blade isn't enough for you, Victorinox makes a 8" fillet knife, not form the Forschner line that cost even less.

This is a timely thread, I was looking for one too, and was particularly after a folder. I had considered the Spyderco Catcherman, has anyone got opinions or experience with this one?

I've got an older Catcherman. I just can't like it, as much as I want to. The serrations get in the way too much for it to be very useful, IMHO. I've also had terrible rust problems with the ATS-55.

I heard from one of the fellows that went out to collect the whale, he claims that the knives would hold an edge for a full half day before they needed sharpening when cutting the hide and longer when cutting blubber. He still owes me some photos.

Knife sounds good, can you e-mail me some info I can pass along to my friend, and do you do a 8inch or 9inch fillet knife? and what would be the timeframe to get one? and of course price. Thanks, thanks to you all for the great info.

Went looking at the sight and found this knife, 440C stainless steel, 8 inch blade..sweet.

I think the Catcherman is now in MBS-26, same as the Spyderco kitchen knives. The rust at least should be much better now.

I bet Sal would appreciate it if you described your problems with the serrations in the Spyderco forum. In my experience they are always glad to hear constructive criticism.

Heck NGK, for $60 i like that custom fillet knife By George! hehe 8" and 440C sounds like a winner to me, i bookmarked his site, i forgot what great prices he had.

Cheers!

Just a word to remind you that you are looking at kitchen models, they do not come with sheaths. When I need a kydex sheath however I send the knife to Normark at On Scene Tactical.
