Looking for the best non-emergency firesteel (I have a one handed model already) that throws the biggest, hottest, best sparks.

So what is best? I already have a light my fire scout, and I am not impressed.

You are going to get bigger, longer burning sparks with a misch metal rod rather than a ferro rod.

Goinggear has some good misch steels as mentioned. Firesteel dot com has got to be the meanest, hottest flame thrower misch metal steel that I have ever used though. Be forewarned, the striking technique is nothing like what you are using with the Scout firesteel.

Thicker rods seem to throw more sparks, longer might help too depending on your striking technique.

The small rods are hard to work with, especially if they don't have a handle...hard to grip and hold steady.

I wasn't impressed with my light my fire "scout" when I first got it, either. But once I figured out the proper setup of things I'm trying to light I've changed my view on it. Watch a few videos on youtube about firestarting. Lately I've been having fun lighting tea candles with a small corner of a toilet paper or a paper towel square, and a fluffed up piece of cotton ball or a fluffed up half a q-tip is a cinch to light. A little petroleum jelly rubbed on part of the cotton makes it light easier and burn longer and would likely help a lot in wet conditions. Fluffy scrapings from fatwood light pretty easily, too.
Currently I've been scraping just 1/4" or so of the tip of the scout to try to even out the wear on the firesteel. I've been starting several fires a day indoors for a while now (usually a tea candle as described above) because it's actually become fun rather than frustrating.
Try a half a q-tip with petroleum jelly lightly smeared on one side & when that gets easy try other stuff. I bet it'll get easy for you to use in much less time then you think.
