I'm looking for a nice fixed blade to use hunting and various other purposes that will be nice enough to pass down to the kid or nephews. Looking for $150 and down. Any ideas?

If you are willing to wait a few months, you could get a small Charles May utility style hunter,he has a few to choose. You may go over your budjet, but you are right there,so what is a few more dollars,if it's to be passed down.
There's a few other makers with some fine knives in or around this price, but I like Charles' stuff a lot.
I can't see a $150 production fixed blade, when I can get handcrafted and talk with the man who is gonna make it for me,handmade

In production knives -

I'm a big Grohmann fan, and all fit your price range ($50 - $80). Most can be had in stainless or carbon, and some with flat grind. I prefer the #1, 3, and 4.

The Buck 192 would also be a good choice (about $60).

For a traditional carbon choice, the Camillus copy of the Schrade Sharpfinger is a classic (about $30).

I can afford to pay more, but I keep coming back to what I like (also Moras).

Check out Bark River Knives - they are semi-production/custom, great knives, keepers, and worth handking doen to your kids.

Wide choice of handles which affects the price. Wide choice of blade styles.

DLT Trading has the largest selection, and good prices.

One of my next purchases will be a strait blade SPYDERCO. It’s call “street beat”, and has a 3.5” V-10 blade and Micarta handle. It was designed by Fred Perrin and has a very distinct look that will add to its collection value. They can be found for about $150.

Spyderco Moran is a good proven design, historic knifemaker, vg10 steel, all around camp/hunting knife. For your price range you could buy one and have a leather sheath made if didn't like the kydex it comes with.

Bark River offers a grand choice and decent quality.,really so much to choose from.

Fancy something foreign and exotic? Check Kizlyar knives from Russia, excellent finish and feel. they have websites in various langs incl.English. Believe there are US dealers too on-line.

But, take your time whatever you choose and let us know what you opt for.

I also agree with the Bark River knives. They make real nice knives at a reasonable price. I have the Gameskeeper and a couple of others and like them a lot. Having said that, in the $150 to $200 range, you can buy a nice custom. Check out Charlie May, Gene Ingram, and David Winston, they make nice knives out of D2 or S30V. I have a couple of Charlie May's in D2 and they are awesome, and I have heard only good things about the other two guys I mention. For a knife that you plan on handing down, a custom might mean more.

Kevin, you aren't the only one succumbing to those sweet knives from Eddie. He was putting a mini-IX with smooth natural bone in the mail for me today. In another thread I blamed it on SunnyD. ;) I suppose I really should be thanking him, heheh. Like you, I'm eagerly awaiting the mail, just sooner. While I only dealt with Eddie via email, he was quick to respond and quite pleasant to deal with. Figures, since he is a forumite.

Now I'm hankering for the larger IX in bone to go with it. Sheesh. Just what I need, more bad habits.
