I'm trying to find an outstanding military/survival knife for less than $200. Something with a blade between 5.5 and 8 inches, full tang, made from a top quality steel, with a good sheath.

I am thinking about the Fallkniven A1, and the Swamprat Camp Tramp. Any help would be appreciated.

Everyone on here is in the same boat. From what I've heard, the Camp Tramp is the way to go. Benchmade, Cold Steel, Buck and many other companies put out a lot of good fixed blades. If you're lucky, you might be able to get a good maker to sell you one for around $200.

IMHO it's the CRK Shadow IV but it would take quite a bit of luck to find one for $200. I think I paid $250 for mine.

Pick one - Swamp Rat, Fallkniven, Dozier - can't miss. All terrific knives, most models are in your price range, and if you don't like the sheaths they come with there are plenty of kydex, leather or nylon alternatives.

Find one of the above that fits your requirements and go cut something. :D

For $200 you can buy two Ranger Knives RD7. Best fixed blade value, period.

for $200, if you're talking about wilderness/survival, then definitely get a swamp rat camp trap or battle rat. Best bang you're going to get for your money.

If you're talking about an urban area EDC, i would suggest the benchmade nimravus, the camillus terzuola CQB, or Al Mar SERE.

I have a Nimravus, and I like it a lot. But I'm looking for a larger knife, and I don't like the new 155 fixed presidio. My ideal knife would be a 6.5 or 7 inch blade Nim, so I'm looking for something like that.

If I were you, I would wait for the Swamp Rat Satin Rat, which is the economy version of the Busse Satin Jack. Or try to find one of the limited overrun Desert Jacks, I saw one on the Exchange forum for about $150, which leaves enough money left over for a good sheath. Or get one of the Rager knives, they look real nice. Or, if you want something small, you can get a Busse Model T Street for $187 at the Busse Company Store.

If you want carbon steel, you can't go wrong with either Ranger Knives or Swamp Rats. If you want something stainless, you absolutely can't go wrong with the Fallkniven A1! I've owned one for several years, and it is easily the best 6 inch-plus STAINLESS fixed blade I've ever owned!

Do Busse and Swamprat knives not come with sheaths?

None of the Busses do, but all of the normal line of Swamp Rats do. Some of the special runs like Desert Jacks and Dog Skinner dont, but sometimes there is a sheath availible at extra cost, or you can get something custom. I like Buy Brown Holsters, and Armoralleather.

I've got a Fallkniven A1 and a Swamp Rat Rattweiler. I don't think you can go wrong with knives from either company, and the decision between them depends on personal preference rather than quality.

I think I'm gonna get the Camp Tramp. How is the black "crinkle" finish on the Swamprats? Does it flake, or scratch off at all?

I also have a fallkniven A1. For a production knife it is by far the best using knife I have. Vg-10 is good steel.

VG10 is my favorite stainless still, and no one works it as well as Fallkniven (except maybe Spyderco). I don't know why, but the edges you put on them just seem so much more aggressive than any of the other stainless blades out there.
