I guess many of you would say skill if more important, but assuming skill and wood are constants, what FOLDING knife have you produced the best feather sticks and fine carving with? Thanks, William

SAK Farmer is great. The handle is comfy, no cork screws or other tools on the back end so its good for extended use, the blade cuts like a chainsaw.

SAK Electrician Plus= Farmer with a small sheepfoot instead of can opener and no lanyard bumpout. My Farmer went to college with my son after I found this one.--KV

Like everyone says a good SAK is hard to beat. My convexed farmer is a beast. But for me, my Old Timer 8OT is the best I have. It eats wood and begs for more.

I've had good luck with my SAK Farmer, but for a tough little lock blade knife I really like my Kershaw OD-1. It does a great feather stick and makes a fine carver. It is hollow ground and the tip is thin, but damn, even thin steel can cut wood just fine! I just wouldn't place alot of pressure on the tip, light drilling would be fine.

I don't here many folks is this forum mention Kershaw, but they make a really great knife for the price. You might not like everything in their line (I know I don't), but they do some nice little Made in the USA folders for under $50.00.

I've got a Packrat on the way, after I get a chance to use it I'll post a quick review of it and the OD-1.

Another vote here for the Opinels, I was amazed the first time I cut with one !

I have a Spyderco Sage 1 that does great. It's a really wide blade with a full flat grind, so it's already pretty thinned out at the point that the secondary bevel begins. I hope that makes sense. It does much much better then all of my hollow ground folders, including Spydercos. Any wide bladed Spyderco with a full flat grind should perform similarly.

As long as it's sharp, about any folder I have works great.

I've used everything from a Benchmade 520 Presidio (a tank of a knife) to an old Imperial Barlow with fake plastic stag scales and carbon steel blades. Two extremely different knifes, but both worked fine for feather sticks (as long as they are relatively sharp).

I like my SAK better for it than any other folder I personally own.

I've never owned an Opinel personally but i have friends in Europe who prefer swear by them and I've seen some pretty insane feather sticks they've made using them.

Thinnest blade folder you could find would be my choice. I don't know what that is, but a Case Whittler or something along those lines would probably be it. SAK or Opinel.
