I'm brand new to this and I'm wondering what would be the best book/video etc. for me to get started. Thanks in advance. John

Welcome to Bladeforums and knifemaking.

re Linerlocked folders....The Tactical Folding Knife by Bob Terzuola...excellent on many things and especially fitting the lock and detent on the liner. My copy is a often-referred-to reference book on Linerlocked folders. The Linerlocked folder technology was invented by Michael Walker.

re Slipjoints (like Case knives) How To Make Multi-Blade Folding Knives by Eugene Shadley and Terry Davis...this is out of print and original 1997 editions are selling at a MAJOR premium....but is Excellent, and just about the only book dedicated to slipjoint folder making....it is a good one to read through and then use it as a resource book....you find something helpful every time you refer to it....

re lockback folders and other procedures, but not specifically slipjoints or linerlocked folders....How To Make Folding Knives by Ron Lake, Frank Centofante, and Wayne Clay.... a fine book by 3 top folder makers.

There are other good books like How to Make Knives by Bob Loveless and Richard Barney, and other books, but you asked specifically re folding knives and while you can learn alot from any good book that apply to folders, but not specifically folder information.

re videos, I 'll leave that up to another person.

The BEST Source is to visit with and ask questions and talk with current good makers. The Knifemakers' Guild has a Mentor program... The American Bladesmith Society has classes and Hammer-Ins, The Professional Knifemakers'Association has some fine folks who would be happy to respond to questions and your desire for help.
I don't know where you are, so can't recommend who to call.
Do get a copy of KNIVES 2006 edited by Joe Kertzman and Krause Publications
It has many makers and their locations listed.....
Again, Good Luck and Welcome!

The only book I'm aware of currently in print for slipjoints isn't really on making them. It is "The complete book of pocketknife repaire" by Ben Kelly Jr.
