Best freaking poster of the millenium...?

OK, kiddies, now that Turber has bungled the celebration of the 4,000th member (as, I might add, he did the 2,000th and 3,000th, despite my advice), it is time to act.

There are a lot of new members and lurkers out there. To maximize their experience, I think we should put forth our ideas of who the best F**KING poster(s) of the millenium is(are). This would alert the newbies so that they can watch out for the pearls.

I mean, who do YOU click on every time you see his logon? Cougar? Joe Talmadge? Vampire Gerbil? Cliff? Harv? Jim March? These are just a few that come to my mind; surely the rest of you can come up with others. Perhaps we could have Mike make up another survey. Perhaps we should have categories: humorous, entertaining, enlightening, totally off-the-wall, technical. You get the idea.

Paraphrasing Jerry Maguire: 'SHOW ME THE POSTER'

So, here is the idea. Run with it.

Joe T., Steve Harvey, Cougar Allen, Jeff Clark, Carl Jacobson, Corduroy, and (dare I admit it) Snickersnee. Of course the moderators, James Mattis and Sal Glesser.

Stop when you get to bone.

Posters of Farrah Fawcett were pretty popular with teen aged guys in the 70's - but I think Vampire Gerbil might give her a run for the money.

James Mattis, Snick, Cougar, Walt, if Bill Martino got out of his own little hidey-hole more often he'd be in the running
smile.gif
as is he deserves special recognition for tireless online service and the #1 frequency slot.

Spark would qualify if he wasn't so busy with "forum business" posts and could have more fun
smile.gif
. That about sums it up for Mike too, but in reality the whole site is a memorial to him. Mike, Spark, no BS here, you've done one hell of a job.

Vampire Gerbil deserves special mention as "came the furthest the fastest" and probably "funniest".

Jim; I KNEW I forgot something in my post: sucking up to the administration. Jeez, must be getting old.

Yes, Mike, you have done a stalwart and convincingly overwhelming job with your forum. I publically applaud you for it. If enough people subscribe to your e-zine, will you promise to buy a REAL sports car, like a 911?

Spark; you have done a stellar job running the forum; your deft touch with the computer is easy to detect. Especially when you leave on vacation and leave fumblefingers, er, ah, let's just say the somewhat less technically inclined Mike at the helm. If only you could restore my 'whacko' status...sigh. (Message for newbies. When this forum started up, the little caption under your name was 'junior member' or 'senior member.' I thought this was rather dull, so asked Mike and Spark to put 'Whacko' under my name. They gleefully complied, and were promptly deluged with other requests, which they had to, for the sake of simplicity, decline. Somewhere in the many rebuilds of the forum since its' inception, my 'Whacko' status was lost. Spark claims to be unable to restore it.)

In all seriousness, Mike and Spark: you have done a wonderful job. Your forum has assisted and informed countless people. You are both worthy of the highest commendation.

Now, will you send my ATAK2 back?

(Formerly Whacko) Walt

A good title of a post will get me everytime no matter the name/handle.

Members posts I click on just because: Cougar Allen, Joe Talmadge, Walt Welch, DannyC, Jim March, Spark, Mike Turber, Steve Harvey, Yekim, James Mattis, Ken Onion, Hank Reardon, Snickersnee, James Y, Yvsa, Danelle, Sal Glesser, Tim Flanagan, Corduroy, bald1... Like an Oscar speach there are more but I can't remember them all

For content I know I'm going to learn something from these guys: Joe Talmadge, Walt "Whacko" Welch, Mike Turber, Spark, Tim Flanagan, Ken Onion, Kodiak PA, Cougar Allen, Jim March, Snickersnee, Ewok.

For car accident posts (just can't take your eyes off no matter how gruesome): Vampire Gerbil

For best poster of beautiful knife pictures: James Mattis

Awww, jeez, Dave, now I have tears in my eyes. It is just like being a real 'Whacko' again!

Gratefully, 'Whacko' Walt

PS I am amazed that anyone even reads my posts. Except Cougar, to see if I have made a mistake.

...oh, okay, i'll do my own homework...The Posters I Will Read Anytime, Anywhere, by silverwing:

James Mattis: his dignified, humourous, well-written, learned, and utterly respectful posts are always amongst my faves.

Joe T.: he explains complicated things really well. plus he's Joe Talmadge
wink.gif

Cliff Stamp: doesn't post often, but when he does, it's REALLY worthwhile and i always learn something.

Corduroy: i like his knife mods and the way he discusses technical things. he writes so that you can hear how much he loves working on knives!

Carl Jacobsen: jeez, this guy can WRITE, and write WELL about ANYTHING, from ATS-34 to aliens. knows his stuff, and loves his knives.

Sal Glesser: he's so genuinely interested in what we all have to say...his respect for ELUs and his knowledge of the industry keeps me coming back for more.

Jim March: sometimes he's learned. sometimes he's hilarious. sometimes i read him just to see what he'll say next!

bald1: nice perspectives, solid things to say, and sense of humour.

David Williams: i like the questions he asks...quirky but intelligent. (i had your name in the list BEFORE i read your post, DW, really, trust me)

Spark: his views are well-reasoned and he keeps his head in a firestorm.

Mike T.: all of the above, but also i like how much of his passion for knives comes through in his writing. (and he didn't even have to pay me to say that)

Cougar: oh c'mon. we ALL read Cougar's stuff. funny, informative, logical, clear, plenty of big words and big ideas to keep us on our toes
wink.gif

Paracelsus: how can you resist posts by a 500 year old guy with great knives?

Jay Maines: ever since that 12-step thread, i read him to laugh and to learn. (plus, it's hard to forget the name of a maker whose knife is haunting me even tho' i've already bought my christmas present. away, ghostly blade, away!)

and of course, the Star of Our Show: S/He Who Must Be Read Right Away, our own Vampire Gerbil. (don't laugh so hard that you lose track of the khukuri s/he has in hand, however...)

i know i've left someone out. . .oh well. thanks for all the great posts, everyone!

what? you didn't ask for REVIEWS of each one? oh sorry, but hey, it's me, the one who can't even abbreviate her own STATE

Silverwing; you posted:

You, silverwing are a true mistress of sarcasm! One would never know you are an ESL!

Well, I guess if I were to whittle it down to one poster, it would be my esteemed colleague Mr. Allen.

"and (dare I admit it) Snickersnee."

I'm really suprised anyone would mention me at all, what with my generaly abrassive personality, tendency to get into, disagreements; and considering that I'm generaly in opposition of much of the "tactical" scene as a whole, as well as accepted doctrine.

Hey, if somebody is getting something good out of my posts, I'm honored.

Nick; I think that you have just summed up what separates a good poster from a great poster. Fine words. Walt

Okay, I'm leaving out a lot of people (apologies in advance) and I feel like I'm forgetting someone, too; these are just the names at the very top of my list:

Jim Mattis & Joe Talmadge - I've been following these two around since rec.knives, circa late'95/early'96 (so if they look worried and keep glancing over their shoulders, now you know why) -- zeroed in on them pretty early as must-reads; always informative, always enlightening. (And this isn't a plug, but anyone who hasn't read the first paragraph on James' ChaiCutlery page should go read it now -- sums up my attitude towards knives better than I could ever hope to write...)

Mike & Spark - not only are their posts always interesting, but any thread started by either one is an automatic must-read because they often have some connection to what lies ahead for our beloved Forum, either directly or indirectly. My hat is off to these two for making this place go...

Sal Glesser, because it's just too cool hearing from the head of the company that makes most of the knives that one carries around.

Corduroy, and not just because he has the best tagline on the Forums, but because he's always up to something interesting...

Cougar Allen came to my attention just recently, during the spaceship key conspiracy; his posts are a wonderful mix, passionate yet well-reasoned, balanced with elaborate and clever flights of silliness, and on occasion voracious enough to cause one to wonder whether it's Coke, Jolt, or Mountain Dew in his permanent IV. I agree with Spark's comment some time ago: how come Cougar isn't a moderator?

...and, of course, Vampire "Official Blade Forums Mascot" Gerbil -- 'nuff said.

The more I think of it, the more I think that Vampire Gerbil deserves a special niche in BFC. After all, who can post (especially if pictures of him/her are present), and have you react with loss of sphincter control, projectile vomiting, and hysterical laughter. Simultaneously.

Yes, we will have to be creative in handling this dark genius. As well as being very, very careful.

I LOVE slipping this kind of stuff under Turber's radar. heh heh heh. Walt

Doc,
Great thread! Your right, Mikey missed out again. Glad you saved us.

BTW, Walt, you will ALWAYS be a wacko in my eyes......keep up the good work!

Since two of my favorites have been left out I will add in my 2 cents...
Gus Kalanzis - always the gentleman
Rick - has forgotten more about knives than I will ever know
I always read Snickersnee's posts...his real world experiance speaks volumes

For me it would be you, Dr. Welch. Your discussions of finger amputations from folder lock failure on the Benchmade forum caught my attention long ago and I always want to see what you have to say.
