i have an 8 inch grinder but it's single speed and runs at 3500 rpm. Will that do or do I need to look into something slower?

It's your call really. Some folks prefer a slower speed but the manufacturer recommends a speed right around those rpm's. Can't remember the exact recommendation but it's in the 3000 rpm range.

If you already have the grinder I recommend trying that first. You can purchase a slower speed model if you feel you need it but I doubt you will.

I use mine on a 3450 rpm buffer. Works good just use a light touch. If you eventually go to a substantially slower rpm (1725 rpm) the manufacture recommends getting the softer wax for the grit wheel.

I'm in the "higher speed" camp, so you should be fine. Also, do you already have the wheels? Though not totally necessary... it's commonly recommended to get the next size larger than the grinder (so 10" wheels on an 8" grinder, etc.)... for proper clearance of the motor housing.

I should have to the 6 inch grinder, the 10 inch wheels are expensive

My Creusen DS7500TS grinder runs between 1400 and 1700 r.p.m, and this works just fine for me.

Getting the next larger size isn't totally necessary... like I said, depends on the motor housing... it might interfere with your hand or the handle.
