Hey Guys, I have a project that is going to require a lot of material hogging with my 3.5 inch angle grinder. What grinding disc do you recommend?

I'm looking at some of the norton Gemini 36 grit wheels, but I wanted to see if anyone had a good recommendation

you have many choices of flap disc grit. i use a basic A24 wheel for heavy removal, then use a 120 grit flap wheel. wheel brand does not seem to make that much difference. be sure to break the wheel in before using on a blade. variable speed grinder is a big help also.

Are flap disks better than hard wheels for bulk removal?

Yes. We've done extensive testing at work between hard wheels, flap disks, and different brands of each. The only thing that compares to a flap disc in a 4.5 inch grinder is a diamond wheel. They're pretty expensive and really not fun to use due to the vibration transferred to your hand. They're essentially a metal disc with diamond brazed on.

A large hog grinder (1.5 - 2hp) with a 24 grit cup wheel will beat just about any flap disc but most people don't have the air to run them.

Flap discs win in a 4.5" grinder for both removal rates and finish quality. The only thing they're not good at is grinding a hard line/edge/groove. Then solid wheels are superior.
